Whirlpool Anonymous in Saint Joseph, MI:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

Lots of options given to new hire. Very easy to get involved in major projects and be able to take a significant role with the design.

Cons

The benton harbor and st. joseph area is probably not for those used to city life. However, there are some big cities (Chicago) nearby.

Advice to Senior Management

Continue pursuing a global strategy to help ride out these tough times in the US. If you don't start attacking the low-end market though, LG and others are going to gain a huge market share as consumers are looking only to spend bottom dollar in these tough times.

Pros

Nice small town to live and work in.
WHR is a family friendly employer.
The opportunities to see multiple areas of the company are available.

Cons

Not in a big town... may not be the right place for those looking to live in Chicago, New York, or LA.

Advice to Senior Management

Be more candid about what is going on within the company. This is a typical corporation in America, so employees expect the norm... break above the crowd and be open and honest in all of your dealings.

Whirlpool Anonymous:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Lots of attention on employee development with a strong emphasis on finding new, innovative leaders within the organization. If you are looking for somewhere with good potential for advancement, WHR is a good business.

Cons

Strategic direction is not always clear and common, aligned business objectives across different functional roles are not aligned to motivate the best posible team atmosphere. This business could be more singularly focused.

Advice to Senior Management

We are a manufacturing business that wants to be a marketing company. It will be hard to become a strong marketing company with the leadership in place that is still anchored to conservative manufacturing mentality.

Whirlpool Field Representative in Benton Harbor, MI:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

* Passionate and understanding management; great to work for.
* Excellent products and commitment to the customer; can have pride in what you represent.

Cons

Upward mobility can be limited if you're unwilling/unable to move to MI, but being in the field is rewarding.

Advice to Senior Management

Stop promoting the people in marketing before they do anything innovative.

Whirlpool Anonymous:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Not a bad place to work at all; management is understanding and gives you tools to be successful. Whirlpool is a market leader, so customers all know the products well. More opportunity for advancement would be nice, but overall, a good company.

Cons

More reviews to talk about personal performance and career paths. Also, senior management could give more advice, but it is not bad the way it is.

Whirlpool Anonymous:   (Current Employee)

Pros

There are plenty of challenges within Whirlpool for those that seek them. The company is huge on owning your own development and if you work hard at doing so, you will be successful with the company. Generally, the people are easy to work with.

Cons

Initiating changes can take an extensive amount of time to pass through the many layers. If you are fresh out of college and want to move up quickly you better go into the LDP program because they seem to promote the LDPs and not other college grads that are in a specific role but also demonstrate top talent.

Advice to Senior Management

Continue to drive the organization around growth and development of employees. Ensure that employees that want to move up are given actionable plans built around the necessary steps they need to take to grow into their next role/set of roles.

Whirlpool Anonymous:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

Great co-workers, work-life balance; easy commute; many opportunities to give back to the community; ability to go to school and work at the sametime (although educational reimbursement isn't the greatest)

Cons

Little communication; allows underperformers to stay too long; not accepting of change; slow to execute strategies/plans; managers and employees don't understand the performance strategy; success can be more dependent on relationships than actual performance

Advice to Senior Management

Communicate more openly with employees. Ensure that opportunities for advancement are truly fair (based on performance and not relationships). Be more open to creative ways employees approach problems. Try to be mjore decentralized.

Whirlpool Senior Financial Analyst:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

Work was very challenging and working with different personality was very interesting.

Cons

The company had a bad management, at least the manager I worked under.

Advice to Senior Management

Senior management should find out regarding turnover rather than accompanying bad managers.
