I have been working at Whitbread full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Busy environment there's always something to do and the team is great to work together

    Cons

Sometimes too busy and things can get out of hands easily if the team doesn't work well together or the manager schedules badly

    Advice to Management

Help managers more by not giving them that much freedom in their management style and talk to the team as well as the manager to get the real feedback.

    I worked at Whitbread part-time

    Pros

Reasonable renumeration Good employee development and opportunities for progression Good communication from management and senior management, staff are kept well aware of changes to brands etc

    Cons

Long, unsociable hours Management are willing to ask too much of staff at times, without much thought as to how it may affect a member Lax followings of working hour regulations etc.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time in the local branches seeing how top level changes affect daily life before implementing widesweeping ineffective changes.

  6. Working as a chef in Brewers Fayre- for the past three years- has been, for the most part, enjoyable and fruitful.

    Pros

Staff and colleagues are friendly and easy to work with. I have been given multiple opportunities to progress- from a Dishwasher to a chef- in a short space of time. I have been given responsibilities unprecedented for someone of my age.

    Cons

However, I feel the level of pay i now earn is below standard. As a trained employee of 3 years, I am a valuable part of the kitchen, that being said, I earn £7.20. In comparison, a team member's starting wage is £6.50- that is, a 16 year old working part time out of school as a front of house waiter. I feel this low pay grade is due to budget cuts from managers seeking bonuses- managers who are in turn fairly compensated for saving money. This then results in high manager turnover and instability in the workplace. To put this in perspective, since August 2012, there have been 4 Kitchen Managers, 4 General Mnagers, 3 Depute GM's, and countless Team Leaders and Assistant Managers.

    Advice to Management

See my Cons list, in short, pay the deserving staff a bit more, or risk losing them to competitors like Greene King, etc.

I have been working at Whitbread full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great company to work way up in. Good benefits. Good working environment.

    Cons

Overworked. Bad management taking sides with preferred team mates. Lazy team leaders.

    Advice to Management

Treat team leaders same as team members. Allow 12 hour gaps between shift as it states in handbook

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Whitbread full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Preparatory courses, shooting stars, some coworkers, chances of progressing in various areas of the hotel, chance of learning in other areas (cross training)

    Cons

General manager totally unprepared, responsible for the dismissal of many employees who worked for many years in the hotel, too much pressure and little financial return for employees, employees paid below the average market.Nobody cares about what you did for the company , they dont look behind.

    Advice to Management

Stop flirting with employees and prepare better for it to be a good leader, fair and realistic giving importance to what the staff do for the good of the company and recognizing the value of employees.

I worked at Whitbread full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Got time off when needed - sometimes at short notice (due to nature of industry), often a good team atmosphere.

    Cons

Often long working hours. A great deal of staff rotation. Basic/minimum wage. Some items of machinery/tills constantly needed fixing, and often didn't get replaced when they really should've been.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps more staff incentives/bonuses would decrease the staff turnover, and also boost morale. This would almost certainly increase customer satisfaction, and therefore generate more repeat business from clientele.

I worked at Whitbread full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

always available for work, team work, lots of part time work, friendly, it was great team work with 20 odd years ago with fresh food with less microwave

    Cons

not enough promotions, low pay, far too many youngters rather than older teams, too many paperwork which course less on customers interactions. far too many microwave food now compare to 20 years ago.

    Advice to Management

out fronts teams get good tips and bonus money when customers gets good feedback. but kitchens team gets nothing considering they are the one who actually cooks food! all out front team take food out and place on table, that it. bit unfair on kitchen teams ,give them something on bonus on monthly basis

    Pros

A nice friendly place to work with focus on training and development rather than a blame culture. Provide a nice working environment.

    Cons

The hours you can be expected to work are very long especially if you are on your feet all day. Work days end up being the same.
