Very cool space in the market and good products

ConsNo place is perfect and trying accomplish a LOT with fewer resources than we'd like is hard work
Keep expected market adoption to grab hold, but its getting there gradually

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep narrowing in on the strategy and areas of focus
Continue to increase visibility for employees

Take it for what it is.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThis is a great place to coast for a year until they figure it out. Always have a backup plan.

ConsManagement is clueless about what goes on with support, engineering, and sales. All of the departments are fiefdoms. The primary concern of the executives is maintaining their status within the political structure. The software is so bad, they need an army of people to support it. The euphemism is "software as a service". They do not deliver on their service level agreements with customers. They spend money like drunken sailors on internal meetings and boondoggles.

Advice to Senior ManagementTotal restart. The board of investors need to reclaim this company and prune the entire sr. management team. Put it to sleep by cutting the staff and spending by 80%. Provide excellent support to only the top customers.

    Exciting place to be!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsPeople, people, people. That's what makes WhiteHat a unique environment. It's not often that you wake up and look forward to coming in to the office. There's always something to learn from someone - everyone is very open about sharing knowledge. Flexible work schedules, stocked kitchens, unlimited PTO policy and great benefits that cost next to nothing.

ConsThe fast pace is like nothing I've seen before. Priorities change often and you just have to roll with the punches - which is typical for a start up environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementSolidify company vision and strategy.

    "Industry Leader"

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe break room is always stocked.
Always listens to those that are in "the in group"

Really amazing at convincing people to drink the koolaid, for a very long time

    ConsContinual layoffs
Refusal to listen to individuals that care about the future of the company
Lack of vision for the future
Too many cooks in the kitchen

Development is given too many new things that must happen, and not enough time to repay the tech debt that has piled up
TRC has to work around the mess that development has handed them for years, and they are completely unappreciated

Advice to Senior ManagementThe CEO needs to pick a direction and drive.

Good solution and place in the market, but Management is a mess and putting business in jeopardy.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSolid product for web application security and strong customer base, leading position in the market. Top leader is well liked, a visionary, and has full intent to improve the company and grow the business. WhiteHat has really good people doing most of the work and contributing to the bottom line.

ConsThe convicts are running the asylum. High level management in sales is not business savvy or smart, and have no idea how to set up a model that works, run the ship, or grow the business. When in doubt, they lay people off and cause internal turmoil, leaving those left lacking confidence in their job stability or trust in management. Management does nothing to inspire employees, they sit in their ivory tower waiting for things to happen, and look down on the working class. They lay off good people, or panic and make drastic changes with no thought behind the repercussions - causing business and morale to further decline. Management is mainly perceived as incompetent. This company has no mission statement, no core values - they're a 13 year old company in start up mode. WhiteHat won't grow up without a roadmap for success.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop laying people off and making employees your scapegoat, even after a quarter with positive revenue results. It is your incompetence and lack of leadership and vision that is causing business to decrease or not grow to expectations. Employees are quickly losing faith in your ability to run this company.

Company doesn't know what it wants to do

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros1. Relaxed work environment in the Threat Research Center(TRC).
    2. There is opportunity to learn, just don't expect the company to appreciate you learning new things.

Cons1. Awful salary after several years - In the TRC you start low which makes sense, but after a few years don't expect to have a livable wage in The Bay Area. Your salary isn't tied to how well you do, it's how well liked you are by upper management. In TRC it seems one has to be apart of a certain clique in order to reap the benefits of pay.

    2. You are not valued in the slightest - Despite the department telling you the opposite, they want you to leave the TRC after two years. It doesn't matter if you're a value to the TRC, if you aren't friends with the right people they don't want you to stay. The company is now facing the dilemma that talented employees want more pay instead of leaving. It is apparent upper management has never had to deal with this before, and does not know how to handle this situation.

    3. Terrible upper management - The management in TRC is atrocious at the top. It seems they sit back and do nothing. Employees who come up with great ideas that would improve TRC are laughed out of the room. Employees have been told how bad an idea is and on many occasions have had their idea stolen. For example, an upper manager will come up with this "new" idea (the same one that somebody else was told "wouldn't work") and push it out into the department. They then will take credit for the idea without having to acknowledge the original person.

    4. TRC is efficient, rest of company is not - TRC knows what it wants to do and continuously works towards this goal. The rest of the company has no idea what it's doing and has no vision:
    a. Customer Support is a mess of misinformation and confusion
    b. Marketing has no idea what it's doing
    c. Development was a massive liability until recently
    d. Sales does not care about margins, only gross. This continuously hurts the company by the awful deals they make, which in turn costs the company profit.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit acting like a high school clique and get it together, you have a group of amazing individuals who are the sole reason this company is a success. Reward them with what they want and need in order to live in this area. The industry has changed and competitive pay is something that needs to be addressed, stop ignoring it and pull your head out of the sand.

    Talented People, Poor Sales Leadership

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat story for building a Web Application Vulnerability program. Talented committed people in several areas of the company. Good CEO - visionary. Good benefits. Fair compensation plan. Collaborative good learning environment.

ConsSales Leadership is arrogant, chooses to intimidate vs. encourage, deliberately chooses to play head games often ignoring questions, approvals, basic support requests. Condescending at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider taking a closer look at how WH Sales teams view how they're treated by upper level Sales Management. Is there good two way communication? Is their encouragement? Fairness? Does good support exist to get the job done and be successful?

Lacking process and procedures requires jobs to evolve on the fly

Sales Engineer (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsYou will be on the cutting edge of web application security. Work environment is relaxed and you won't need to justify your job quarterly/annually.

ConsNegativity runs rampant through culture. No accountability between departments and between manager. Company executives initiate programs drastically changing job roles and functions without planning it out, writing it down, and executing with follow through.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe open to new ideas; ask more questions.

Great place to work, terrible salary

Applications Security Researcher (Current Employee) Houston, TX

ProsReally interesting, fun work, lots of learning. Benefits are fantastic. Opportunities to work from home, and PTO policy is great. Management listens to concerns, and positions are very flexible if you want to work in another department.

ConsBase salary is terrible, especially compared to market rates for similar positions; benefits help but only so much. Work/life balance can be pretty hectic, especially with noisy clients or big projects. Can be monotonous when dealing with a large influx of clients.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease base salary. Market rates are double or even triple what new employees are paid.

Innovative environment that's suppressed by management

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    Pros- Great environment
    - Smart people
    - Unlimited days off
    - Autonomy
    - On the cutting edge of web app security

    Cons- Low pay
    - No leadership
    - Feels like you have to be apart of the "cool clique" to move forward, vs. actually being smart and wanting to apply yourself
    - Lots of energy spent on politics/drama vs energy spent on product development/management/support

Advice to Senior ManagementHire talented managers that come from strong and successful backgrounds. We have a great product, a great team, and people willing to go the extra mile...if you let us. We need leadership ASAP.
