    Good place for research

    Graduate Student (Current Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsCore facilities are fantastic, lots of brilliant people, cookie hour, forums

ConsInter-lab culture can be somewhat lacking, and it's cut off from the rest of MIT. Also the labs tend to be very large and disconnected from each other.

Good place to do postdoctoral research

    Postdoctoral Associate (Current Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsThere are a lot of talented scientists. Stimulating research. Lots of opportunities for collaborations

ConsAlthough WI has one of the highest salary rates in the US, all postdocs in the academia are severely underpaid. Long hours, also comes with the territory

Great learning experience with the best of the best in the field.

    Undergraduate Research Student (Current Employee)

ProsAmazing and patient mentors to teach students like me from the very basics.
Great resources for learning and for work!
Staff are so nice and helpful. Always willing to lend a hand.

ConsBench space is limited! What is an office?
If you don't buy your media, beware of (somewhat infrequent) mishaps in the in-house media.

    long hours, but unlimited funding

    Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

Prosthe place is a great door-opener on your resume, but don't expect to get any mentoring or support from colleagues or faculty. at best, they will criticize, at worst, they will steal your ideas.

Conslong hours, no personal time, internal competition

Advice to Senior Managementthe old guard needs some changing. david page has been phenomenal in implementing benefits for postdocs, but for the most part, it's the age-old practice of cheap labor on the backs of ambitious, low-paid students postdocs. i would estimate 70% of the current workforce is heading straight to industry or consulting, they've been so soured by the academic experience.

Fantastic institute for biomedical science but very competitive and cut-throat

    Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee)
    Cambridge, MA

ProsThe Whitehead is a fantastic scientific institute where the most cutting edge biology is taking place. They invest many different programs to take care of their postdoctoral fellows (computer programming courses, grant writing). WI is at the forefront of pioneering efforts to bring great benefits to its hardworking postdocs. Its a great collaborative environment to get science done across multiple disciplines. The Broad Institute and HMS are very close...it never hurts to be around lots of smart people who can help you get things done.

ConsThe major downside is the high level of competitiveness at the Whitehead. You have to realize that you are dealing with some of the most competitive investigators in the world. You have to play their game and learn their rules. Protect your ideas and your work because you never know who will take them from you and claim them as their own...

Advice to Senior ManagementProtect your workers ideas and interests.
