    Pros

Staff is positive, committed to making a change. Expanding services makes it more exciting.

    Cons

Like most clinics, change is slow and their infrastructure is old. They are working to improve that by moving to a new location.

  2. Helpful (1)

Love the mission, but not the leadership.

    Pros

WWC (Now WWH) is a tremendous resource in the community. They provide services that are not being offered anywhere else in the city.

    Cons

Unethical business practices (like firing HIV+ staff before they could take LTD, and eliminating case management without adequately notifying clients); high turnover rate; a tendency of growing grant-funded programs without clear plans for sustainability once the grants ran out.

    Advice to Management

Consider the culture you're creating with the current leadership style in place.

    Pros

The benefits are great here, and I have better insurance/vacation time than many other comparable positions. The salary is competitive for the nonprofit sector in DC. The pace can be pretty fast at times, given the busy nature of the clinic. The work/life balance is outstanding--the work doesn't really follow you home or require you to stay too late too often.

    Cons

There's a lot of human error involved in various cross-department communication. There are also wildly different standards of professionalism in the departments. The patients can be both great and incredibly difficult to deal with.

    Advice to Management

The place has turned a page, financially speaking, so keep up the work that's brought it to solvency.

    Pros

Nice co-workers. Noble work. Great services

    Cons

Low payment. Mot the nicest area. The clinic could be nicer on the inside

  6. Whitman Walker Clinic, a continued downward spiral.

    Pros

WWC is a community health center that serves the needs of GLBT, underserved, and HIV+ people in DC. The work done here is crucial to the health and well-being of its client base. The professionals that work at WWC are some of the best in their field, not because they are highly compensated, but because they truly care about this work and helping people.

    Cons

The clinic has been terribly mis-managed for years. The mis-management continues to this day in that day-to-day management is chaotic at best and incompetent at times. Management has no credibility that they can competently lead the organization out of its financial crisis. Each year there are layoffs and assertions made that the organization is on the right track. More layoffs and financial disasters then follow. First the organization fired managers because there were not enough direct service workers and salaries were reallocated. Then they fired line workers because they were incompetent. Then they fired management because they didn't want to cut direct services and blamed it on the poor economy, when in fact they were seeing an increase in client visits. The real problem is that the financial management of the clinic has been so poor that they are not competent to access the funding sources which are available and that visits which are billable to insurance or grants are not billed and hence the clinic ends up loosing money because of its own managerial incompetence.

    Advice to Management

Communicate the true economic picture of the organization and invite the organization to help. Foster cooperation between departments instead of fighting and fear of loss of resources. Fire incompetent managers before considering firing employees.

    Pros

This organization does really important work in the community and provides incredible health services. It's definitely an organization worth supporting.

    Cons

No structure. No training. No protocols. Lack of professionalism. Lack of organizational cohesion. Less than ideal work environment. The organization is understaffed for the size of the organization.

    Advice to Management

Operations are definitely not unified. There does need to be a comprehensive view of management and reorganization. Implementation of previous projects was not handled in a comprehensive fashion.
