Pros – Williams has wonderful benefits, contributes to the betterment of the community, has many talented and intelligent people working for them. A permanent position with the company is definitely worthwhile, esp if you can get into a department with good management.
Cons – Williams will lead contractors to believe a permanent job is on the horizon for them (one for certain was kept on a leash for 4 years), and then never deliver. I know of many who were treated as I was. They use the older contractors to train the younger college recruits, and then let the older contractors go, even ones who have been loyal contributors to Williams for over a year. Some of these "older" contractors were under 35! I was a contractor trying to get a permanent position with the company. A great deal of money was invested in training me which turned out to be a complete waste as a VP would not approve the position to be permanent. I noticed a great deal of resources spent in other areas as well that were seemingly wasted regularly due to politics and power struggles.
Advice to Senior Management – Appreciate the older worker who brings experience and maturity to the company. I understand the desire to try to keep the young professionals in Tulsa, but to mistreat and use the older professional shows a lack of class and will cause them to leave Tulsa instead, and take their skills with them. Eventually, the younger professionals will also leave for greener pastures in other states, after they've made their mistakes at Williams. If you want to hire a college recruit, do not kick a contractor out of the position they've been working in for months and sometimes years to do that. It is better business practice to do right by people. The long term rewards are much better for the health of the company.

Former Employee – worked at Williams Companies
Pros – I felt that Williams Company was a great place to work. They provided great benefits and competitive salaries. The upper management was very involved and did a great job.
Cons – The only downsides for me was that I did not get to travel much so I was mainly in the office.
Advice to Senior Management – I would suggest more hands on approach as well as maybe hiring a few more interns so that new young talent can get some experience.

Current Employee – been working at Williams Companies
Pros – Work-life balance. Almost impossible to get fired. No pressure to actually do anything.
Cons – HR input into non-HR areas is out-of-control (career path, job requirements, salary)
Internally terrified to anything "social media" oriented.
Too much focus on activity and not results.
Would rather reach consensus than implement anything meaningful.
Leadership is non-existent; no strategic plan, no focus on results or goals.
Advice to Senior Management – Fire some people once and awhile. Make people do their jobs. Quit being scared of growing. Define actual "strategies" rather than continued misuse of the word.

Former Employee – worked at Williams Companies
Pros – Tulsa based company has made it past hard times and seems to be on its way back. Big United Way supporter.
Cons – Company had to overcome some poor strategic moves competing with other firms like Enron and Worldcom. To some extent, the company lost its values in the late 90's.
Advice to Senior Management – Consider the real value and cost of outsourcing to sustainable industry leadership. Make a commitment to lead by example always.

Former Employee – worked at Williams Companies
Pros – Pays pretty well, no dress code, come in when you want, leave when you want.
Cons – Management incompetent..in it only to line their pockets. Promotions are not based on best qualified, based on good old boys network and affirmative action. You can not promote the best, unless you have a good performance process.
Advice to Senior Management – Develop discipline. Learn from past mistakes. Promote the best.

Former Employee – worked at Williams Companies
Pros – Best pay you can find in Tulsa compared to other places.
Cons – The good old boy network is alive and well here. Various cliques exist that only promote people in the areas for reasons besides the abilities. One group was known as the mormon mafia, if you weren't a mormon you wouldn't be accepted in the group. Another was headed by a woman that only hired women. Still another was based solely on being male. If you could get into one of the cliques then it wouldn't matter how good or bad you were you would be promoted and moved on up without question.
Advice to Senior Management – Resign. The senior management is as bad now as it was when they were a whisker away from going out of business. They only survived because of dumb luck investing in E&P in the Rockies. And they only kept that business because when they were doing a fire sale to raise money no one wanted to buy it. In all the management is not going to grow the company just manage what they have.
