    Good experience, mild politicking.

    Contrator (Former Employee)
    Winona, MN

ProsExperienced, drive, committed stakeholders that are open to discussing ideas and comfortable contributing to creative strategies without being inflexible.

    ConsLack of cohesive interdepartmental communication.

Advice to Senior ManagementWorking is a pleasure with various factions within the organization but all too often the contractor is left to his own resources to solve office politicking. Continue to build cohesive relationships between departments to foster a better sense of collaboration while minimizing competition.

Great place to work, in a great place to live.

    ITS III (Current Employee)
    Winona, MN

    Pros- Excellent work-life balance.
    - Decent pay and benefits, especially for the area.
    - Very collaborative environment with highly skilled co-workers.
    - Management is reasonable and respectful.
    - Opportunity to work with current technology.
    - Opportunities for training, attending conferences, etc.

Cons- Few opportunities to advance. Advancement often driven by longevity rather than merit and there is no real career planning.
    - Union environment. Pay is not linked to merit.
    - Long range plans tend to be vague and not well linked to execution plans. IT Managers are not good at Project/Resource Management and too distant from what people are actually working on. Little to no accountability for not getting projects done in timely manner.

Advice to Senior Management-Work on improving the linkage between long range plans and actual projects.
    - Improve how projects are managed. Don't allow project deadlines to meander quite so much.

ProsGenerally, good salaries, excellent benefits, and equitable treatment, because nearly all employees belong to a state or national union. That gives the union great leverage in negotiating workplace policies including salaries, benefits, opportunities for development, evaluations, hiring practices, and more.

Most employees, including supervisors and administrators, are dedicated and supportive, and staff and faculty work as team.

The university is located in a smaller city (30,000) with a low cost of living, a rich array of fine arts, and a multitude of outdoor recreation opportunities.

ConsAs in many colleges and universities, some staff and faculty take advantage of the security of tenure, fulfill only part of their responsibilities, and/or perform minimally or worse. Until faculty and staff themselves hold their colleagues accountable, this will continue.

For faculty, the union can do little in cases of unfair denials of tenure and/or promotion. While most tenure and/or promotion decisions are just, a significant portion are not, and this can be brought about by a single colleague or administrator.

In evaluating faculty performance, administrators ratchet standards ever higher as if faculty have ever-more energy and hours. For staff this takes the form of always-increasing responsibilities while the number of employees remains static.

Conversely, the number of administrators has grown sharply over the past decade.

This university is part of a statewide system, and the central administration for the system, located in St. Paul, consumes resources far in excess of the benefits it provides. Yet until recently it has been held largely unaccountable. This past year, for the first time, the legislature forced them to distribute allocated funds to the universities and colleges without first taking a huge slice for themselves.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen you raise the standards for performance in one area, balance that by explicitly lowering the standards in another.

Faculty and staff resent colleagues who use take advantage of tenure. Ask how you can help them hold their slacking colleagues accountable.

WSU--a great place to learn, succeed, and live!

    Management (Current Employee)
    Winona, MN

ProsBeautiful campus, great working environment, excellent benefits, the community is a great place to raise a family. Nestled between the bluffs and the Mississippi river. 25 miles from La Crosse, WI; 45 miles to Rochester, MN. Surprising number of companies in the area offering opportunities for students to work, partner for projects, and have an internship opportunity. Home of the Great River Shakespeare and Beethoven Festivals.

ConsSmall town, 2 hours from Twin Cities, lack of fine dining establishments. Land locked on an "island."

ProsFaculty to student contact. Community service oriented.

Getting hired was a painless process and I learned the most while doing calls and instant messaging full-timers.

Student Technology and Resource Specialist (At West Campus Office) (Former Employee)
    Winona, MN

ProsIt was convenient while in school and relaxed place to work. The West Campus office had a different atmosphere than Main because there were usually only 1 to 3 people working at the office at a time. This is a hurry up and wait sort of thing where you enter the call and do the work as efficiently as you can and then sometimes you wait an hour or two for another student to walk in. It was OK to bring something else to do for when it wasn't busy.

ConsIf you don't have a car, you can take the shuttle but it does not always leave or arrive on time. The supervisor understands that and would also usually schedule a little overlap between students' shifts. I had to leave nearly half an hour before a class to get on the right shuttle to guarantee getting to it on time.

My experience at WSU has been a truly wonderful experience.

    ITS III (Current Employee)
    Winona, MN

ProsBest Reasons to work at WSU:
    - Collaborative, learning environment. You work with others as equal partners to accomplish your goals.
    - Relatively few organizational politics, especially for the public sector
    - Environment that invites learning and innovation
    - Respectful employer/employee relationship

ConsBased on my experience, there is relatively little that detracts from the work environment. Like any government institution, occasionaly common sense gives way to abiding strictly by the rules, but no more so than with other larger employers.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to promote collaboration, innovation, and respect and you will continue to receive great things from your employees.
