I worked at Winona State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working at the college, you get the maximum flexibility with your schedule to take time off for classes or studying. I worked with some very good people that made the job a lot of fun.

    Cons

The job didn't prepare me much for life after college. I got too safe with the great schedule and the easiness of the job that I didn't bother searching for a job in my field that would help me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are a lot of slackers, I would pay more attention to them and make sure you're getting full value out of them.

I have been working at Winona State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-life-class balance is superb. You make your own schedule for the most part. Very understanding of vacations and time off. Large gains in real world knowledge and testing in the field. Good pay for college students.

    Cons

High learning curve. High expectations. Training seems to never end. No benefits other than good pay and time off. Responsibilities are not very evenly distributed between employees. No room for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep better communication with employees.

I worked at Winona State University as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Experienced, drive, committed stakeholders that are open to discussing ideas and comfortable contributing to creative strategies without being inflexible.

    Cons

    Lack of cohesive interdepartmental communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Working is a pleasure with various factions within the organization but all too often the contractor is left to his own resources to solve office politicking. Continue to build cohesive relationships between departments to foster a better sense of collaboration while minimizing competition.

I have been working at Winona State University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Excellent work-life balance.
    - Decent pay and benefits, especially for the area.
    - Very collaborative environment with highly skilled co-workers.
    - Management is reasonable and respectful.
    - Opportunity to work with current technology.
    - Opportunities for training, attending conferences, etc.

    Cons

    - Few opportunities to advance. Advancement often driven by longevity rather than merit and there is no real career planning.
    - Union environment. Pay is not linked to merit.
    - Long range plans tend to be vague and not well linked to execution plans. IT Managers are not good at Project/Resource Management and too distant from what people are actually working on. Little to no accountability for not getting projects done in timely manner.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Work on improving the linkage between long range plans and actual projects.
    - Improve how projects are managed. Don't allow project deadlines to meander quite so much.

    Recommends
    Negative Outlook
