What does our job really mean..

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsLove for the students & community. As a former student, I loved to talk with the current students & share my experiences at the university & advise them of their needs & goals. The community also provide good support to the university.

ConsLack of teamwork, communication & job benefits . After experiencing both sides as a student & staff member..I see that people dont really understand that their main goal is to support the students.. Some departments are not organized which hurts other departments within the university. Also there is no room for advancement & the healthcare benefits are not being met.

Advice to Senior ManagementSocialize & communicate more with the students & monitor the organization of each department. Without the students there wouldn't be a university.

Having the opportunity to mold young minds is such a rewarding experience

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe students are the heart of the institution, the comraderie between colleagues who have the same interests in the students is awesome.

ConsThere are personal agendas all over the campus, many people are only concerned about status or a maintaining job, the morale is low, and bullying occurs. This was not the case about 3-4 years ago.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf the students are not top priority to you, then your talents would be better suited in a corporate setting.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Mixed feelings

ProsThere is a real sense of community when you work at WSSU. Everyone really tries to work together.

ConsSome people can take their power and run with it. You will get work request and orders from people that don't need to be giving them.

The experience started out great, but the politics run circles around DC politics.

ProsThe best reason to work at WSSU is the time off during the Christmas holiday. They do require you to use your vacation time to fill in the full 2-weeks, but it is a good perk to have about 2wks off during the holidays.

ConsNo advancement opportunities, but you do get the chance to be assigned additional duties with no pay. You may go for 3-5 years without a raise, while parking, and health insurance premiums go up. Once hired, be ready to accept additional duties of at least 3 other jobs b/c there is no budget to hire additional help. Mgmt is bad about wanting to keep their star employees from seeking out other opportunities within the instituion.

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer advancement opportunities for employees. Practice the state's internal hiring policies. Don't be afraid to allow employees to grow.

Good place to study...but not to work

    Technology Coordinator (Current Employee)
    Winston-Salem, NC

ProsThe benefits such as health insurance. Depending on what areas you work in, you may find enjoyment working directly with the students. There is a since of family that is felt on campus

ConsNo professional development or growth opportunities. You may be asked to carry several different roles and responsibilities but with the same pay. The Directors feel superior and as if they don't have to learn policies and procedures. Support staff generally run the departments requiring minimum supervision

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not micromanage and complete performance evaluations on a regular basis. Learn all policies and procedures so that you are aware how to function even when your administrative assistant is out.
