I worked at Winter Haven Hospital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Short distance from where I live.

    Cons

Staff is overrun with incompetent nurses who show a complete lack of concern for patients. I worked with nurses who NEVER WASHED THEIR HANDS as evidenced by ink marks that remained on their hands throughout the shift & the next day.
Cardiac nurses who were unable in read an EKG.
Floor nurses who were clueless about medication administration.
Management is unconcerned with patient wellfare.
Paid time off shortchanged regularly in pay checks.
No employee discount in cafeteria, food is lousy anyway.
Nurses leaving the building while on the clock to run errands.
Nurses who sleep on the job. There is one on who sets up a chair in the bathroom so she can put up her feet & sleep in privacy, management is aware of this & does nothing.
    RNs who don't access patients.
Medications marked as given when they were not.
Employees who are ALWAYS LATE. This is never addressed by management.
Incompetent nurses are promoted, good nurses who speak up about conditions in this hospital are encouraged to leave.
I worked there for two years and was lucky to leave with an intact license.
The thought of being a patient in this institution fills me with terror.
If you are thinking of working at Winter Haven Hospital think again. This is not a place for a caring nurse. If you are unsure about which end of the syringe to insert into the patient this is the place for you, go for it!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Every mamager in that building with a license should work the floor for a month to get a true idea of conditions there. Non licensed patients try a week as a patient.

I have been working at Winter Haven Hospital

    Pros

Good benefits, Great co-workers. Generally very patient oriented. Moving in high-tech direction with e-charting.

    Cons

Hospital spending seems to be unit revenu based. Psych unit needs many upgrades

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management of hospital very competent. Unit based management needs to let employees demonstrate their exceptional ability instead of micro-managing.

I have been working at Winter Haven Hospital

    Pros

PTO earned. I have a job.

    Cons

Paid time off can't be used for what it's there for. It supposed to be for sick time, which unfortunately can't be scheduled. Floors are always short staffed so you create problems when you're not there. All problems are brushed under the rug by higher ups. They are where they want to be so no one wants to do anything about real issues. They're all friends and don't care about the employees actually doing the work nor do they have any respect for them. They get big bonuses at the regular employees expense. The motto of my manager is "if you don't like it LEAVE and there is a line of people to replace you for less pay," and the pay isn't much! The scholarships that are awarded go to RNs and people in management that can afford to pay for their own further education. They go to school to be able to do even less work than they already do for more money. They should go to the $10 people who are trying to better themselves and raise their families. My boss gets a big scholarship for college and won't allow the us attend if it affects the schedule. I would not be treated at this hospital. Most of the nursing personnel are incompetent. There are some good nurses but they are spread so thin.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go to school and learn how to treat people before you go into management. Stop taking bonuses and pay your employees. Lose the" you're lucky to have a job" attitude. This hospital is on a downward spiral because of your greed. Get rid of bullies in departments.

I have been working at Winter Haven Hospital

    Pros

Lots of PTO, great benefits, they will pay advanced tuition for school, flexible scheduling, diversity of coworkers, they recognize people who do an outstanding job

    Cons

The pay at Winter Haven Hospital is low compared to other hospitals in the area. You are usually required to work some weekends

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be fair to all employees as far as PTO requests go. There have been situations I have seen and heard of where one employee is given PTO when another has asked earlier or has seniority

I worked at Winter Haven Hospital full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers/peers have dedication to patient care.

    Cons

Constant change, poor communication between grassroots worker and senior management. Senior managers protect each others jobs. Bad bosses are kept even if the department has high turn-over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to operate more like a business. Be consistent. Listen to the end-user (bedside nurse, technician in the trenches) and really apply change for overall efficiency, not just one department.

    Pros

Interdepartmental relations are good between similiar shifts( night / day).Majority of personel are team players and respectful of each others roles.

    Cons

Management fosters snitches and backbiters. They also tolerate arrogance towards others and do nothing promote professional communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Education department needs teach and require professional communication courses.
