    Pros

    Excellent colleagues -- Intelligent, fun, interesting, and good people. Very healthy and positive culture. The engineering talent level was also extraordinary, and that was maintained largely even through rapid growth because the hiring process was very effective and selective.

    Cons

    Fairly reactive and chaotic approach to what projects we took on, which was accentuated by a growing emphasis during my time there on doing consulting / custom solutions work instead of product work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Now that the company has been purchased by News Corp., I've heard a lot of the old culture is disappearing. This is a big mistake, although with nearly all the technical and social linchpins of the engineering team gone, it may not matter anymore.

    Pros

    Free soda and popcorn. Most employees are passionate of what they do. Great Ideas.

    Cons

    Office politics. No personal growth. Management doesn't like to spend on training.

    Some really brilliant, smart people. Interesting work. Very fast growth, plenty of opportunities.

    Constant meetings. Sometimes long hours. Challenging internal communication.

    Pros

    Good hard working co-workers, lots of smart people really trying to make things happen, great view in Brooklyn office from some meeting rooms, can be creative place if you connect to the right people and learn a lot if you are self-starter who needs little guidance.

    Cons

    Leadership is a collection of hold-overs from the start-up days when there was no systems in place, no accountability, and few rules in place which may work for a company of 10-15 people but doesn't work so well with a company of 900-1000. Unrealistic deadlines made by people who don't know the mechanics of project management or don't care that unstructured projects cause people to work long hours and over weekends. A lot of poor quality work passed off as final products, most everything is worked out in production leading to many hot fixes and more long hours. Little respect for teachers or end-users in many within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Come out of your offices and work on the floor. You set up a 19th century factory in Brooklyn to make product, now lead it like a 21st century organization. Open office means that everyone is out in the open.

    Pros

    Friendly and talented co-workers, working in education, DUMBO location, free coffee and soft drinks, usually very little pressure to get things done.

    Cons

    IT ops was incredibly mis-managed. Lots of broken processes and questioning them just makes you a target for the petty leads. Morale was absolutely terrible and most of the good people have moved on to greener pastures. Very little career growth and you reach the top of your career path in about a year. If you do take a job here, try to get everything in writing up front. They will make promises of bonuses, promotions, and in my case green card sponsorship but won't keep their word. As I was leaving they again offered all of these things to me and more, but at that point it was way too little, way too late.

    Take a serious look at why people are leaving. There have been employee surveys and many exit interviews for you to learn from.

    Pros

    This company truly cares about innovating education. It is pretty much a Technology-Education company filled with very smart people.

    Cons

    Management is iffy. There are bad product managers and some good ones. Often times bad ones are there for a very long time that they have become a mainstay. Often the mainstay will cause havoc in team dynamics, causing some to leave. Although the company practices a 360 Feedback, management is not doing this, therefore, people from the bottom cannot complain about bad management, and therefore nothing is done but let these 'tenured' managers run rampant with bad behaviors. This causes people to leave. Otherwise, most of the people in the company are good to great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Higher-level executive managers should employ feedback policies across the board, and 360 feedbacks. Managers with very bad behavior ruining the company remains unchecked, undisciplined, and stay there to ruin or slow progress in the name of their ego.

    People are very bright, passionate and talented. They really care about improving educational experience for both teachers and students.

    Cons

    Communication across divisions is very weak. Lots of silo work and it is hard to get promoted or get a salary increase.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need to open to changing operational procedures and communicate more effectively from top down. Seems like a lot of talented people doing work that may not be value added if there is lack of direction.

    As a father, feels great knowing that my code is helping classrooms around the country. Cool people, growing company, awesome view of the Brooklyn Bridge from the office.

    They can't keep up with the growth. Everyone in the company is busy working.

    Pros

    Awesome Location. Really amazing people, some of the brightest I've ever worked with. I learned so much there it's unimaginable. WGEN treats their employees incredibly well and the atmosphere and energy is very positive and productive. Wireless will bring out the absolute best developer in you because they give you all the tools and incentives you need to make it as easy as possible at writing the most elegant, beautiful code you can. You build cutting-edge technology USING cutting-edge technologies and all of your coworkers are geniuses to boot. Not to mention the location (Dumbo) is UNBELIEVABLE nicer than Tribeca and has a ton of amazing shops, restaurants, and bars. Overall an incredible company to work for.

    Cons

    The culture is a bit stagnant, or "corporate", at times, but that's expected in a company of that size and it's certainly not like that ALL the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Culture is not something that can be taught in a presentation. Give your employees an awesome work environment and the culture will manifest itself.
