I worked at WithumSmith + Brown full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Worked at one of the smaller offices and enjoyed the experience.

    Cons

Sometimes working in a smaller office limits your learning experience. You learn to do many different things, but don't get the chance to specialize in one.

    Pros

Good starting point for an accounting career. Able to gain broad experience.

    Cons

While experience is broad, it is limited when looking to transition to industry after too many years.
    Very little SEC experience available.
Willing to give very minor pay increases and bonuses while praising performance.

    Pros

The best reason to work for WSB is the ability to work with people with great experience. There are some terrific people at the firm.

    Cons

The is no coordination between offices. People that are inexperienced work on assignments they are not qualified to work on. Fee proposals are below the actual time and expense for jobs leading to charge-offs and negative reviews.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More time should be spent developing the staff and better use should be made of experienced staff.

    I worked at WithumSmith + Brown full-time

    Pros

Diversity of experience opportunities between tax and audit. This is what makes it a great firm to start out. Coming out of school, it is difficult to know what you want to do exactly. Having diverse exposure can help you make you decision, in addition to having the knowledge.

    Cons

Promotions seem to be based on how long you've been with the firm and who you know, rather than competency to run engagements and ability to give guidance to staff. I would say only 25% my superiors met the latter.

I know culture is a big thing with grads these days. And this is probably why the firm does their annual music video. But such things overshadow hard working individuals. Some people want to work hard and be appreciated and compensated for it. The idea that work is fun is one big sham.

A lot of office gossip, even though there were well over 100 people at my office location. I know gossip is prevalent in the workplace, but it was really over the top here, and severely hindered work and efficiency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Promote competent individuals that have the ability to mentor and give guidance to staff

    2. Get a grip. Enough with the dumb video productions:
                     a. Its just stupid. The firm still doesn't realize that their YouTube hits are down year over year. It was cute the first time, but thats about it.
                     b. When you put the same people in front of the cameras every year, its quite obvious that anyone that is not the center of attention doesn't have much of a future at the firm. Unless of course they want to stay in the same position for 20 years and never make partner.

I worked at WithumSmith + Brown as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good atmosphere-- not as hectic as a big four, you also stay busy. Pay is below the big 4, but is still very respectable. Company makes an effort keep employees happy with fun events

    Cons

Tax season interns spend most time doing tax, if you want more exposure to audit, it may be hard to get that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most of the partners are approachable and helpful-- some of the senior managers (who often review your work directly) can be difficult to work with.

Top Notch CPA Firm - Great Culture

I worked at WithumSmith + Brown full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I spent approximately 10 years at WS+B. This is a top notch, respectable firm with its greatest assets being its people and its culture. There is typically great communication from the partner level to the staff level. The firm uses the latest and greatest technology and is sometimes ahead of even the Big 4. Flexible time policies, generous "outside work" events. Lots of opportunity to succeed. If you are interested in a Public Accounting career path, you could not ask for a better home.

    Cons

Hours - as in any CPA firm a lot of hours are required. (There is some flexibility and there is some telecommuting possible, but it still is a CPA firm and expect 55 hours during busy seasons). You will not get exposure to the BIGGER companies. Withum deals with a lot of smaller companies and not-for-profits. If you are looking to experience a lot of SEC clients, this is not the place. There are several partners that operate "outside" the firm norm. They have different expectations than the other partners and treat the firm as their own and dont follow policy, this can be very frustrating. There are a lot of cliques, if you get into the right one it will advance your career quickly, if you are in the wrong one it can stall your career. Pay is a little low for the industry and bonuses can vary wildly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The managing partners leadership has grown the firm and reputation of the firm and is heading in the right direction. Continue to mentor the young CPA's. More emphasis should be put on quality of work, rather than quantity. And one last suggestion - the firm videos were cute the first year, and even the second year. But they are really becoming cheesy and stale. It may be time to rethink that marketing strategy.

    Pros

WS+B is a professional, friendly and rewarding place to work. They not only work hard, they play hard as well.

    Cons

As in any organization, communication is the key to success. When there is a breakdown in communication it can lead to delays and disappointments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain open communication at all times.
