Over 20 years here and still happy

Partner (Current Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I have been working at Womble Carlyle full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe firm culture respects individuals and appreciates work-life balance. The size allows for challenging cases. The firm is more willing than most to try something new (advertising, web page, non-traditional service models).

ConsDo not always recognize/reward acheivements. Partnership track is long.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good place to work. Lack of management engagement with staff.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Womble Carlyle full-time for more than 10 years

ProsSalary is decent. Benefits are good but they used to be better. Good quality of life. I enjoy my co workers and my work is interesting.

ConsRetirement benefits (401K match) have been cut in the past several years. This was done for economic reasons. Things appear to be better financially now for the firm but the retirement cut remains in place.

Firm management does a poor job in communicating with staff. Good attorneys sometimes do not make good managers and that is the case here. It doesn't mean they are bad people but they seem to have a blind spot when it comes to building up the firm culture/team work. Lip service is given to the idea but over the years the sense of us "all being in it together" has really declined. The firm has very much a top down management style with little to no interest in input/engagement with the staff.

I like my job and I have been treated well, but over the years I have become increasingly detached emotionally from the firm. I try to do my work well but I now really do see my relationship with the firm as purely a business transaction. My loyalty is more towards my co workers than the firm in general. The firm in the end has no sense of loyalty to me.

Again this is a good place to work, but it used to be better and I miss that.

Never been treated so shabbily

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Greensboro, NC

I worked at Womble Carlyle full-time

ProsNo pros about my job itself or the company.

ConsHorrible condescension directed at support staff from attorneys. Focus is on how much money attorneys can bring in, and NOTHING else. Support staff treated like something to scrape off a shoe. VERY, very low pay for support staff; attorney-to-support-staff ratio of 7:1 or even as bad as 9:1. No respect at all. Hideous "me me me me" culture.

ProsFlexibility, great work environment, good people

ConsParalegals are billed in the same range as associates but their compensation doesn't compare in the same way as that of associates/partners houly billable rate and their compensation

Charleston office is a mess

IT Department (Former Employee)
Charleston, SC

I worked at Womble Carlyle full-time for more than 10 years

ProsBenefits are good, though not as good as in past years. Used to be a nice family feel, but not so much anymore. Still a lot of nice people working there, but most feel abused and worn out.

ConsAll of the worst business practices and fads of the last 30 years are in practice. Outsourcing, beating down employee morale to keep them terrified of asking for any change, raises or improvements, no mobility, overloading current employees rather than hiring sufficient staff, replacing experienced people with cheaper new hires fresh out of school or outsourced contractors.

Advice to Senior ManagementFrom what I hear things have only gotten worse since I left. You really need to look closely at your senior management team.
