    Room for improvement

Customer Support Agent (Current Employee) Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

ProsMy customer support team mates. Wonga is full of intelligent staff with a wealth of experience and they are an absolute joy to work with. Wonga are trying to create a good work environment and striving for the feel of the larger American companies out there. They started well and constantly provided little treats to keep motivation and energy up and celebrated whenever they could. Unfortunately since moving building in Mar 14 a lot of the perks have disappeared. Teams have scattered to different parts of the building rarely to be seen and the shared joy of our free lunch Friday has been replaced by a 'subsidized' canteen that offers no atmosphere and little relief from the day work. Wonga would greatly benefit from revisiting the previous company attitude they had just a few months ago that made the whole company feel like a team rather than the separate clogs of the big machine they are attempting to become.

ConsI can only speak about the customer service dept - The brilliant staff are undervalued and progression is near impossible. There is no attempt to show appreciation for the staff and while promises of staff consideration and better opportunities are spoke of often the reality is that these changes are a while off yet. Wonga need to start hiring on mass and stop letting valuable staff and their vast knowledge walk out the door. Needs dictate that Wonga concentrate on their customers rather than staff but this has meant a complete disregard for current employees. They were previously on the right track but since moving buildings they have got rid of free lunches, celebrate nothing, the free drinks on Friday have been confined to the tech and possibly fraud as the games room is on the other side of the building to the customer service agents. All the elements are there to make this a good place to work but there is no time offered to enjoy the facilities. They have also revoked internet access on agents PCs removing the option to spend your break at your desk using the internet.

Advice to Senior ManagementStaff development. Meet with your staff and find out how they are feeling and what they require. You have intelligent staff who could be used to fill supervisor/team lead roles but instead these roles remain empty? Utilise the people under your nose. If asked they would tell you that they want to get ahead, that they would be happy to stay here and remain loyal to Wonga. But if that respect is not reciprocated you will find yourself with no tenured agents and you will lose valuable knowledge regarding account and customer handling. Turn your attentions inwards and start appreciating your current staff before they all walk out the door.

I have approved the current CEO Tim Weller, good man so far.

Fast paced tech company that provides good opportunities

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTech group continually trying to improve. Company still has good startup spirit. Good benefits. A lot of smart people. And nice office.

ConsIt's a company just out of startup mode and is growing up fast. This means a lot of change as it becomes a corporate.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo your best to keep the tech startup spirit alive!

The story of how bad management destroyed a brilliant place to work

    Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsMost of the tech people are very smart and talented. Good location and modern office. Salary is ok. Friendly people that makes you enjoy your day. Challenging projects. Good teams and friendly atmosphere.

ConsHorrible management that ruined the culture, teams or projects. There is no place to grow these days. There is no recognition most of the times. The best talent and the original guys are leaving. Most of the time your opinion is not asked - just presented with the fact. You can't grow unless you agree blindly to the middle management (clueless) even if some of the things makes no sense.

They used to be very open and transparent in the past but now it's gone. It's all about management fight over power.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think it's time to acknowledge what is going on and do some real changes as some of the best people are starting to leave and the IT industry is booming. Hire some real professionals and replace the CTO that destroyed the values we stand for. Promote some of the internal tech people that really know the system into team leads or managers. Be more open, give recognition, ask and respect the voice of the people. Stop hiring clueless new managers and start to promote within.

    Worst place I've ever worked

Customer Services Specialist (Former Employee) Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

ProsThe only pro was the day I walked out the door

ConsThe "free" Friday lunch comes with a lecture during your lunch time, so...not free.
Management were 2 faced and the overall atmosphere was look after No. 1, there was no feeling of being in a team.
Don't asked questions about the poor quality of systems or other procedures or you'll be escorted out the door.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive better training to staff, listen when they say that they are not being challenged and used to the best of their abilities, that is the reason they are frustrated and unhappy in their job. Don't promote those who you like, pick someone who can get the job done and is qualified and experienced to do it. For the time I was there the same people kept getting varying responsibilites but if others asked we were always told there was nothing to do so to get back on the phones.

    Horrible management

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsGood location, team mates are generally nice, salary is ok.

ConsHorrible management. No place to grow. No promotion from with in, unless you suck up to the bosses. No value to your work. When they let you go, they do it in a very unprofessional fashion, even though they don't think so. A lot of people leavening due to these things.
If you see many ads on hiring the same positions all the time that tells you something.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the ones you have, hire real professionals with experience in managing people. Value your employees and create a non suck up environment,

    Good people, bad management

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsThe staff are good natured and there are some really smart engineers there. Dublin office is nice, has just been done up. London office is nice too but the Dublin lads got a better deal than us.

ConsThe politics. Senior management has created a toxic environment where everyone cuts each other's throats in order to get anywhere. Technology is as flexible as concrete. Competitors will very quickly eat wongas lunch as a result.

CTO is destroying the tech department. Developers are treated like children. He has his favourites which he rotates every so often. It's all command and control. Avoid.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a REAL close look at tech. Morale is incredibly low. If you're not careful you could have an exodus on your hands

Advice to Senior ManagementGet Real Professional Managers with Qualifications and promote the genuine hard working Individual and not the managers pet.

    Full Time employee (Ireland)

Customer Service/Fraud (Current Employee) Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

ProsThere are some great people. The free lunches on Fridays but that's just to appease every one.

ConsThe lies. Bad management in customer service and fraud. Lack of appreciation for their employees. Management don't really care if your good at your job. Total lack of management skills.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of them and hire real good ones. Ones that really know how to manage people.

    Questionable ethics, questionable leader

Engineering (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsProfitable company, solid VC backing, some really smart & some really nice people (some are both)

ConsThe ugly stuff you read in the press about Wonga's business model is true and then some. Most of the business is based on people taking loan after loan and very likely borrowing from other short term lenders to pay back their loans with Wonga.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the lies both inside and outside. The problems come from the top as some of the managers seem to genuinely want to introduce change and transparency but that minority is too silent or simply doesn't seem to stay long enough.

Great profitbale product, pretentious middle management

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsVery profitable, great CEO (as long as he is careful he is not building a fat bank behind his back)

ConsPretentious middle management who think they are LinkedIn or facebook lookalikes but who exhibit poor leadership coupled with very low strategic thinking, if thinking was something they could do.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring some serious people who are pragmatic, disciplined and organised.

    – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
