    I worked at Woolworths part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    I started at Woolworths in an 'after-school' job but ended up staying for quite a few years. Everything is done 'according to the book', so you were always confident that the pay would be correct, workplace health and safety good, etc. I wanted to progress into supervison, etc but they could only guarantee 15 hours per week and I needed more hours to meet my financial commitments, so I moved to a new job. I would have liked to have progressed through the career ladder if I could have been guaranteed more hours.

    Cons

    Give hours to younger employees to save money

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Utilise experience as a balanced approach to saving money by using youngest workers.

    Complete nightmare working in division 2. Other divisions are still good to work in

    I have been working at Woolworths full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Waste and staff discounts. The opportunity to work with some highly skilled and talented people who still try their hardest even though it is never acknowledged or appreciated - these people inspire and lead, learn and master a wide range of management skills

    Cons

    The politics - division 2 is especially bad. Everyone I know is only waiting for their share payout in 2015 before walking. People are leaving faster than they can be replaced - people with skills that will not easily be replaced. Total accountability but no resources to do the job properly. Daily threats of suspension and losing your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Ditch the Values - no one lives up them - just words on a wall in every store. Please also discontinue the so-called variable pay incentive - it is insulting to reward your staff with a R100 before tax bonus for contributing millions in sales over budget - no wonder they steal

    I have been working at Woolworths

    Pros

    Great benefits, meeting lots of people. Good place to work at.

    Cons

    Management positions is given to there favourite people only. Not to those whos working long at woolworths, has a good cv, works hard and do there training on there off days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop promising staff growth if there isn't. Growth is handed out to your favourite staff only.

    I worked at Woolworths full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Exciting business with many rewarding challenges;
    Seeing a product you contributed to on the shelves;
    Convenient services available to staff in the building.
    12% Discount on product in stores.
    Waste shopping at stores is helpful for staff.

    Cons

    Continuous restructuring of staff and departments creates uncertainty;
    Managers "delegate" their work to staff which unfairly increases workload to 2x or 3x what you signed on for and then punish you in your review for not doing your own work;
    Unfair promotions, backstabbing, managers not taking responsibility for their mistakes, screaming and bullying too commonplace in the office.
    HR are puppets to management - going to them for assistance is useless as they report things said in confidence straight to management;
    There is no regard or concern for employee's personal needs and time, e.g you get called and e-mailed at all hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Senior management is not aware of what middle management is up to. When staff who have been with you for many years start jumping ship when a new manager is employed / promoted - you should start being concerned. You're losing your most important asset - the people who have helped make the business a success.

    I worked at Woolworths as a contractor for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Learn to work as a team, under pressure and how to talk to customers. Flexible hours, decent hourly rate and always paid on time.

    Cons

    Many customers can be difficult to deal with, often verbally and physically aggressive. Shop lifting is very common. Very repetitive tasks to complete each shift

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Mix up tasks for each shift between employers. Higher security guards for each day of the week.

    I have been working at Woolworths full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Flexibility, good remuneration, career progression, professional support, variety, great team environment.

    Cons

    Stress placed on staff to over achieve, lack of clear communication avenues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Ensure that positive information and reasoning flows down to all level of staff, its good to know that every effort is appreciated. Often the bad is expressed loudly and the good whispered.
