I have been working at World Duty Free Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You normally get the days you request for off.

If you work evenings you will almost always get overtime.

They now cover disability insurance and life insurance.

    The 401K isn't too bad.

You start get sick hours when you start working. Vacation hours after 6 months. (It takes a while to get enough to use though)

Paid major holidays. 8 hours. But you have to work your scheduled day before and after the holiday to get it.

    Cons

It takes time to hire people since they have to pass a background check. This is the airports fault, not the company. If you are short on people be prepared to work 6 out of 7 days.

The schedule comes out every week.

If you work evenings, you never know when you are going to leave. Thus the overtime.

The grey work shirts are ugly.

30 minute lunch break and random bathroom breaks.

You stand all day. You will not be able to sit down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you paid us more, and gave us more than a 30 minute lunch break, you would get people to stay longer. And promote people who care about the job.

    Pros

employee discount on candy bars that are marked up 100%

    Cons

no growth at this company, very disorganized. pay is way below market rate, which explains why they have a tough time hiring. labor intensive and has high turnover. due to it being an airport retail business, you must work on holidays. their way of cutting costs is by getting the employees horrible health insurance coverage. employee morale is low, many employees actively seeking other job opportunities outside of the company. they believe they can compete with duty free shoppers group which is laughable.

I have been working at World Duty Free Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The pay is on the better end of retail. The location I worked at, the Ontario Airport, is under control of LAX, because of this we are governed by the Los Angeles World Airport Living Wage Ordinance which is the reason the pay is so good for essentially a cashiering job even though you're a supervisor.

    Cons

Supervisors are not union while associates are, because of this the cost for benefits is astronomical.
Lack of communication among members of management, because of a lack of clear direction you can be doing something one person told you to do while being reprimanded by another for doing just that.
You pay monthly for parking, rate subject to change at any time.
Long shifts with little to no work, while this sounds ideal, it can be a challenge staying focused after 4 hours straight of no human contact.
If one person calls off, there is NO COVERAGE

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value employees, better rates for benefits, assistance with cost of parking and clear and clean communication. Hire more associates to help supervisors in covering shifts.
Flexibility with scheduling, you're either 430am to 130 pm or 3pm to 1am.

I worked at World Duty Free Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Good health insurance. Employee discount. Not difficult work. They always need employees, so it's easy to get hired. Usually some sort of sales contest going on, but the rewards are usually fairly minimal.

    Cons

Local managers are poor and refuse to give references for future jobs. Low pay. Going through TSA every day is tedious and adds time to the commute. Repetitive tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Local management is unfriendly, unorganized, and unconcerned with keeping employees. They have a tendency to wear down on employees who have been there for multiple years, likely because they have accrued benefits and higher pay. My advice to the management would be to treat their employees more like people.

    Pros

    benefits are decent, good security.

    Cons

Terrible LONG hours. There will be no time for your life outside of work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire from within. Everyone is hired from outside and ends up messing up the company since no one really knows the reality of what it's like on the floor day and and day out. Also, no one has any advancment even though they have been there for 30+ years.

I have been working at World Duty Free Group part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

working at the airport is fun, that's it. nothing good in working with them

    Cons

no flexible schedules, if you ask about some flexibility they will told you we don't care about your needs, we care about the business needs, if you don't like it you can leave. they keep hiring people and take hours away from our schedule to minimize cost.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about your employees needs and less about making profit, don't you ever wonder why you have high rate of turnover?? and please put stools in stores, you are killing your employees when they have to stand for 8 hours and more!

World Duty Free Group is a company in growth with the integration of former retail division of HMS Host North America.

I have been working at World Duty Free Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Established European Company with new growth opportunities in North America. The company is working hard to understand the North American Travel Market in order to expand its foot print. Upper management recognizes and promotes talented and capable individuals. Some of the specialty divisions have won awards for their visual displays and the company is working to take advantage of that talent throughout its divisions. Even though this is travel retail and the hours of operation are long, associates are not expected to work unreasonalbe hours and management is not worked to death.

    Cons

As with any transition there are and will be teething pains and changes. The company is in the process of disseminating its core values of excellent customer service to the new North American Division. This means there are and will be challenges ahead in communication, training. Because this is mainly travel related retail the hours of operation are long, and schedules need to be flexible, presenting challenges to management and employees alike.

I have been working at World Duty Free Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Loved working with the people at the airport.
Loved working with most of the people I worked with.
Work was fast paced and demanding but I thrive on this type of environment.

    Cons

    Disconnect between management and employees.
Top managers want customer service to be number one but store level management is stuck in the task related environment. In other words it was more important to get all your task done for the day even though it would mean customer service suffered.
HR is a joke no body goes to them with real issues because then everybody in the airport knows your business.
Manager never posted opportunities for other airsides because she didn't want the good people to leave

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find out why your people are leaving in droves.
Follow the directions that are set out in the training/introductions that we got from wdfg.
We are human beings first ,start treating us as such.
Teach hr and your managers what workplace bullying is ?

    Pros

Employees are not stuck and have room to advance.

    Cons

Lots of travel may be required

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reducing Retention starts with treating people right, coaching, training, development and encouragement. These things go a lot further than telling others what your title is and letting it define who you are as a manager. Leaders lead!
