Former Employee – worked at XO Communications full-time for more than a year
Pros – Very generous with Paid Time Off. Although "PTO" is not the proper name at XO due to the fact that if the individual does not use the time by the end of each calendar year, they will lose it and not be compensated it for it.
Cons – Managers will say one thing in hopes of getting the team all on board but once it's time for them to hold up their end of the bargain a "Jekyell & Hyde" transformation takes place and the lower level employees are bamboozled again. Extremely thick skin and deep pocket books are necessary for survival. Also, they never promote within. Great pitch during the interview process but nothing could be further from the truth.
Advice to Senior Management – Scrutinize, question and test Project Managers/Program Managers. Even though some of them have been employed by you for over a decade, they are clueless with XO product set, pricing and the management of people. If they are constantly asking you how to price things, that should be a red flag!

Former Employee – worked at XO Communications
Pros – Telecommuting, great technology, poor processes.
Cons – Systems and processes are broken. They are investing in technology and laying off people.
Advice to Senior Management – Management always talk about customer satisfaction but I have not seen any practical implications where customer satisfaction is top priority.

Former Employee – worked at XO Communications
Pros – Co-workers were great, always willing to help and focus on team effort.
Cons – Sales Management in my market was terrible. Non supportive of the sales staff, it was like pulling teeth to get them to join a rep on a sales call.
Advice to Senior Management – Get Sales Managers who know how to manage and drive business.

Current Employee – been working at XO Communications
Pros – - There are always opportunities to move around within the company if your job doesn't fit with your style.
- There are some really great people who work there.
- Lots of little perks like random days off, being allowed to leave early before holidays, options to telecommute, fun days like free movie days.
Cons – - There is sometimes somewhat of an adversarial attitude between departments.
- Some of the managers can be unnecessarily negative and can spread a tense feeling throughout the office by their mere presence.
- It can be hard to concentrate in a cubicle farm. Noise from people just doing their jobs carries from across the room.
- The information systems are horrible, it is like trying to get water from a stone to get usable information out of some of the systems, often dealing with millions of dollars of revenue.
- Management doesn't always listen to its analysts, who often have their ear to the ground and are immersed in the information they are supposed to be making their decisions on.
- Management is often quick to pass the blame on when the consequences of their decisions turn negative, or even get the expected results, but expectations have shifted.
- Computers are archaic, I don't know how they expect me to be an analyst with a computer that barely works and they have supposedly been upgrading the laptops for nearly a year and I have barely seen any evidence of it.
Advice to Senior Management – - Find a way to minimize noise pollution in cubicles.
- Give middle and upper management courses in stress relief and dealing with problems that may arise.
- Spend capital on upgrading information systems.
- Accelerate the laptop upgrades.

Current Employee – been working at XO Communications
Pros – it's close to home; it's telecom; i get to get experience to take to a new place
Cons – 4 years later, the management team still acts like they are in bankruptcy. There is no vision, no strategy to get them out of the dulldroms.
Advice to Senior Management – Create a plan to get to 30 % EBITDA and make it work. Stop worrying about Icahn and lead.
