I worked at XO Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very laid back work environment. This can only be appreciated after you leave the company and go work for another.
Pay is ok, management is laid back in IT. Get to go home at 5pm. Parking lot is empty at 5:30. Allows time for your family.

    Cons

technology can be upgraded. They still use MS Word to do requirements. Outdated tools. Raises skipped. Benefits are not even there. Management do not know how to take advantages of their talents.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

go get refresher in the technology. Some of you need to go to College.

I have been working at XO Communications full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people that actually do the work.

    Cons

Unless your in management you are not going to get anything from this company. There is nothing ethical in their business practices from senior managers up. Directors that are clueless about what you do, but want to change things, to make themselves look good. Their changes are useless for the business. Corrupt business practices, all contest are won by managers and above. oh wait they will give anyone below a $20.00 gift card. They do not have any interest in their employee base, besides screwing them over. The HR department is corrupt as they come, their directors are micro management happy. Management changes every three months, they have departments grouped together incorrectly. If any more Rif's happen it needs to be cleaning out the inept upper management and their buddies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The HR department is corrupt as they come, their directors are micro management happy. Management changes every three months, they have departments grouped together incorrectly. If any more Rif's happen it needs to be cleaning out the inept upper management and their cohorts. You had loyal employee's that you continually screw over, with the worst benefits ever, no raises continually. You hire people off the street at higher wages then the employees that have been loyal. What an inept bunch of liars you are out for yourselves. You can keep having "Town Halls" your employees wont talk because they know their is retaliation! As for your surveys, your number skewing is ridiculous, those people who don't answer fear the retaliation.

I have been working at XO Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Telework opportunities.
Work with some really smart and dedicated people.

    Cons

No room for career growth or advancement.
About 20% of the people I work with are hard workers. Too bad our managers are too lazy to hold the other 80% accountable. They just give the hard workers more work while letting the others slack off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold people accountable for not pulling their weight. These people are getting a paycheck and should have to work for it. Also, put some thought and logic before a RIF. Don't just pick 2 people from every team. Some teams have more projects than other teams.

I worked at XO Communications full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great network. Great people that want to solve problems. Good technical and mid-level managers that want to help people learn and grow. In most markets, the hands on operations folks are extremely dedicated and smart.

If you want to work hard, learn, and create solutions, XO will support your efforts. On the other hand, there are traditional positions at XO that are very stable and some people with the right backgrounds can coast along for 15+ years. As with anything, what you get is commensurate with what you put in.

    Cons

Frequent re-organizations. Too many types of technologies, too many vendors, and projects. Insecurity about future plans from an ownership and high level management perspective. Layoffs are not that nice either... I have not seen XO doing very much hiring in the past 2 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Praise the successful network implementations where day in and day out XO has made equipment function for it's customers. Be more careful about major implementations that are not working. Make bridges between the technical, sales/sales engineering, and activations groups.

    Pros

Laid back, low stress work place

    Cons

not too competitive, or profitable, hence no growth for employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing Management can do, there is no direct relation to performance and funding. The funding comes from a different power.

I have been working at XO Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good people
    Casual environment
    Remote work schedule

    Cons

Never stop looking over your shoulder. Layoffs are always pending. Many people that have been here for a decade are now getting laid off. Management is horrible and never changes. Zero chance for job advancement. Only way to get promotion is threaten to quit and even then your promotion is less than 10% raise. No merit increases in 5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to move on. The IT department has become stagnant. We are so inefficient. Coworkers used to care but most are just happy to get a check. The lack of leadership has really hurt our company.

I worked at XO Communications full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, including WFH. Friendly people, little to no OT required. Mostly a 40 hour workweek.

    Cons

Position was presented as a Sr level SDLC PM role during interview, managing software development projects over 500 hours, which turned out to be NOT true. Interviewer did tell me that the PM group did NOT manage budgets. But the projects turned out to be very small and boring in scope, less than 200 hours, and none were software development projects. In fact the company does little if any true software development, as they are a telecom company. Company is also facing significant financial problems. After 6 months, decided to leave for a true Sr level role.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Address internal personnel problems instead of hoping they will go away. Definitely hire some older more experienced management vs the young kids who will work for next to nothing and have no management/supervisory training. The lack of strong experienced management is definitely hurting your bottom line and sales of your products.
