I have been working at Xavier University part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The culture at Xavier is full of people who are passionate, kind, and willing to help you learn, I have never once met a co-worker who I didn't enjoy. Being around students is fabulous.

    Cons

As is to be expected, Xavier moves at the speed of a University. While we can work hard and get things done within our own departments, moving documents or requests through accounting or HR is a nightmare. I've heard horror stories of people not getting budget numbers for a year, or waiting 6 months for a committee to meet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While I understand that the inefficiency is due to the University culture as well as the large size of the organization, it probably wouldn't hurt to have the new Center for Innovation and some of the MBA Management Faculty do a process consult for the University and improve efficiency.

I have been working at Xavier University

    Pros

Working in a university setting is unique and enjoyable. Staff was very friendly.

    Cons

Lack of communication from superiors. Hiring with no real knowledge of modern technology leads to questionable expectations. Slow moving in making sure their new employees are set up correctly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Communicate with your staff.

I worked at Xavier University as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

My supervisor and her assistant we amazing people to work with. They were both very kind and considerate.
The hours were very flexible (I basically made my own).
It felt very rewarding to help students

    Cons

I worked at Xavier University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Worked in the Office of Admission. Fun and friendly staff, flexible schedule, and monthly trainings/weekly meetings. Working with the students applying to the university was great, very rewarding to help a student make the right choice in attending XU.

    Cons

Petty drama was a given, which was frustrating and sometimes limited collaboration with other staff members. Though office culture was friendly, some staff turned it into an opportunity to form cliques, making it a less-than-warm environment for any targets of their childlike behavior. Pretty avoidable if you made the effort to be nice to everyone, do your work, and stay away from after-work outings.

I worked at Xavier University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The tuition remission is great! For undergraduate and graduate including MBA programs. Flexible schedule in certain departments (especially when students are not on campus in the Summer). Good benefits.

    Cons

Long hours for certain departments, need to be available nights and weekend if you are in certain departments. Not great work-life balance. Not great leadership vision for the future. Small to no pay increases year to year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Conflicting messaging to employees. No transparency.

I worked at Xavier University part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

First hand experience in a DI NCAA athletic department, a lot of responsibility for interns that comes along with great perks. A lot of individual work but always someone around to help you out if you're stuck or want to clear something up. Xavier just joined the Big East so there is a lot of excitement on campus and in Athletics.

    Cons

A lot of work and time dedicated to the job. I put in over 630 hours in the 2012-13 school year alone. Definitely has to be your first priority and can get monotonous at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, very well supervised and provided a ton of assistance and leadership in helping me learn a ton about college athletics.

  11. Consider the Benefits

I have been working at Xavier University

    Pros

The benefit of tuition remission is the best part about working at Xavier. Another perk is that employees get basketball tickets. There are also many dedicated people that have worked at Xavier for years.

    Cons

The salaries are low but consider the benefits. There have been job reductions over the past year. Moral has been low. Difficult to get promoted and move into higher positions.
