I worked at Xavier University part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with on a great mission in education. The education Department was a great bunch of people with whom to work.

    Cons

Parking in the university area was always a nightmare and it is a difficult neighborhood. Great people to work with though.

    Advice to Management

Continue to support the education department as it is great outreach for the university. Make sure you take care of all of your adjuncts. How about parking passes?

I have been working at Xavier University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are very good- best being free tuition. The health benefits are also very good. As the school year goes, the job goes. Can be very hectic during school but a breeze over summer.

    Cons

There are a lot of moving parts, don't always know who you are working under. You have little to no influence to upper management.

    Cons

sub par leadership that has led to three consecutive years of budget overruns...leading to layoffs, salary freezes and suspended salary bonuses.

I worked at Xavier University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Flexibility: I took a full course load and worked multiple jobs, but still was able to get hours - Good opportunities for career development - Fun coworkers - Convenient location

    Cons

    - Sometimes hard to get if you don't qualify for work study - Minimum wage is as minimum wage does

    Pros

They are very willing to work with your schedule as a student so that you can take classes while also working most weeks. The pay is minimum but since the work is on campus it's convenient as a student.

    Cons

Sometimes it's hard to get work if you have odd class hours, as the most commonly available hours are very competitive. Scheduling is partly based off how often you work as you're seen as 'reliable' but if you can't work often it means you also get less hours.

    Advice to Management

Balance the scheduling more fairly so that everyone gets closer to equal hours. Favoritism in scheduling sometimes means that even though someone is available they might only get a couple of hours in a week.

I have been working at Xavier University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The culture at Xavier is full of people who are passionate, kind, and willing to help you learn, I have never once met a co-worker who I didn't enjoy. Being around students is fabulous.

    Cons

As is to be expected, Xavier moves at the speed of a University. While we can work hard and get things done within our own departments, moving documents or requests through accounting or HR is a nightmare. I've heard horror stories of people not getting budget numbers for a year, or waiting 6 months for a committee to meet.

    Advice to Management

While I understand that the inefficiency is due to the University culture as well as the large size of the organization, it probably wouldn't hurt to have the new Center for Innovation and some of the MBA Management Faculty do a process consult for the University and improve efficiency.

    Pros

Working in a university setting is unique and enjoyable. Staff was very friendly.

    Cons

Lack of communication from superiors. Hiring with no real knowledge of modern technology leads to questionable expectations. Slow moving in making sure their new employees are set up correctly.

    Advice to Management

    Communicate with your staff.
