It was a great place to work. Benefits were outstanding. I retired with a 401K that is sufficient.

I worked at Xerox full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

In my 38 years with Xerox the benefits were outstanding and advancement was predictable and fair. However, toward the end of my employment as revenue from Xerographic products declined benefits were cut and salary growth slowed.

    Cons

Unfortunately Xerographic products have become a commodity and Xerox no longer leads the field however diversification seems to be working.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people fairly and they will produce.

I worked at Xerox full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

was a great company. 70s and 80s were great. started going down hill mid 90s with Allaire. Never re-covered from cooked upper management. Current CEO has carried on that tradition.

    Cons

current culture and management could care less about the employees. their main goal is to fill there pockets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

dump Burns go back to original innovative focus.

I worked at Xerox full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Xerox was once a great place to work, but no longer.

    Cons

Xerox has consistently gone downhill over the last 10 years. Five years ago it was due to the economy and print market, but more recently it is the management model. The much touted $7B investment in ACS was supposed to bring tremendous growth for Xerox, but just last quarter the management admitted that the Xerox Services business is not working and they are working on “Services 2.0” to make it a sustainable and profitable business. So, we paid $7B for an unsustainable business?

Every firm needs to run as lean as possible and continually look for ways to be more efficient, but Xerox is ultra-focused on cost reduction and is ignoring investments to grow the business by better meeting customer needs. The frequency of layoffs at Xerox is so common that it doesn’t even make the news anymore. Over the last year Xerox has laid off over 5,900 employees (average of almost 1,500 per quarter). Ten years ago your career discussions with your manager were about preparing you for the next promotion. Today those conversations are about the best group to work in to avoid the next layoff.

Xerox is losing customers left and right due to the continual cuts in engineering, service, sales, and supply chain. Managers spend so much time dealing with irate customers that they don't have time to be proactive about improving the customer satisfaction of those who were not about to throw us out the door. The recent highly visible firing of Xerox by the state of Nevada is a sign of Xerox focusing on internal processes and ignoring the customer needs.

It makes me sad to see what Xerox has come to. When I started with Xerox 20 years ago there was passion, pride, and excitement about working at Xerox. That’s long gone. If you walk in to a Xerox office today you will see rows of empty cubes, and employees that are completely demoralized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The board needs to look at the performance of the company and the management team, and make appropriate (and overdue) changes.

I have been working at Xerox as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

There's lots of exciting opportunities to share your skills with different projects in many different professional areas.

    Cons

If you come in as a contract it's very hard to get hired full time unless you bring some form of a graduate degree with you. No benefits or other perks for contracts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take another look at the contracts your hire. Many of them want to invest themselves into the company if the company is willing to invest into them.

I worked at Xerox full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Like any other big company, if you manage your career and find the right mentors, there is no limit to how high you can rise.
Most positions allow some sort of work-from-home or telecommuting.
Generally, the corporate culture is one of opportunity.

    Cons

Xerox is changing to become a Services company. There is more competition with lower margins than in technology (printers). Revenue growth is an issue. There are pay freezes. There are furloughs (instead of lay-offs). Benefits are constantly being pulled back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay attention to employee morale.

I worked at Xerox full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Nice co-workers, there is nothing else that would be considered a "pro"

    Cons

No raises in 5 years, management is concerned about insulating themselves from being laid off and not trying to fix the problems. BENEFITS ARE AWFUL! There is nothing but stress in the company. A rahter Draconian environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the current upper mgmt. that will change the culture for the better.

I worked at Xerox full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

*The Xerox name still looks good on a resume
*A good place to get corporate experience
*There is a process for everything
*There are some good people working at Xerox

    Cons

*There's not much left at Xerox - the focus has shifted to services. Hopefully MPS will be able to sustain the entire company going forward.
*There is a process for everything - that may sound contradictory, but to be locked in a process in every situation limits the ability to make a client happy.
*Cliques. Advancement is rarely a result of performance and more likely who you know.
    *Long hours with little reward.
