I have been working at Xilinx full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Xilinx is one of a few semiconductor companies which still have room to grow. Uniqueness of product and its innovation enabled continous growth.

    Cons

You need to keep up company's pace to be successful at Xilinx. Work life balance is difficult to maintain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue thriving for the success to lead company to twice as large revenue as today.

I worked at Xilinx full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great people, flexible work hours... look forward to going to work everyday. Operations organization was awesome, with great managers. People who enjoyed work and got together socially to play softball, trivia, etc.

    Cons

politics... and some individuals with attitudes
often unclear why certain people would get promotions when better candidates were everywhere!
Product / Test engineering management thought they were gods gift to the industry, packaging group was clueless

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to the style made famous by people like Bernie and/or Dennis Segers and/or Clay Johnson

I worked at Xilinx full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good technology
    Interesting and challenging problems
Talented, dedicated, unusually loyal people at the leaf level

    Cons

Dwindling /political culture and stacked ranking make for an often unpleasant work environment. It encourages people to be more ruthless rather than collaborative.
Obscure and proprietary problem spaces do not increase ones value much outside of the company
Top down and deep hierarchy - most managers and many directors have muted decision making influence

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Business and people management go hand in hand. You will be more successful if you motivate 95%+ of a valuable workforce rather than demotivate 50%+ (in varying degrees). Good management has virtually no additional cost, but it is not easy. If you need a survey to try to figure it out, you probably will not.

I have been working at Xilinx full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The good are my co-workers. Location is good being in west SJ. Cafeteria is decent.

    Cons

The bad is upper management - they just don't have people management skills. A continuous string of "restructurings" and outsourcing of jobs to Singapore. Upper management is rewarded for cost reductions at all costs, unfortunately they have cut too deep and too much experience has been lost. Not a recoverable situation.

Also, the company bet the farm on dominating the 28nm node - well that didn't quite happen. Not good if you are planning on a lasting career here. Lot's of pressure to keep treading water.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The ugly - upper management needs to be replaced. The board needs to seriously think about replacing the current CEO. The problem is they won't attract top flight talent, so bring Wim back!!!

I have been working at Xilinx full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great technology, lots of interesting projects. Slowly getting more focused on software

    Cons

Very tight execution schedules makes it hard for inter-group co-operation since everyone is taxed for time
Managers still don't really care about employee's careers, not much day to day feedback, nor advise or coaching on how to get to the next level. Management basically say that career advancement is up to individuals (which is true to some extent) but without visibility at higher levels it is hard for low to middle level employees to learn how to grow. Everyone needs to do a little more, management and individuals. But everyone is too short of time to do anything but execute.
