    I worked at Xstrata as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Excellent place to work on. very professional staff on the finance and accounting teams. Great place in terms of benefits and very oriented on employee's security.

    Cons

    Complex and distributed processes across the world. Not big deal when working on site but having to perform a lot of back and forth on the comm while working abroad.

    Pros

    compensation at market rates but can be better.
    some business units have spectacular management.
    for early career, room to grow and develop.
    large organization with great success.

    Cons

    some business units mired in politics, hierarchy, and self-serving managers.
    once you are successful in a role, it is difficult to progress beyond.

    Timmins is not fun place to stay in.
    The factory is pretty dirty.

    -need to reapply to positions when transferring

    -Lots of professional development opportunities
    -Possibility of taking temporary placement at other international operations.
    -Pay and compensation are adequate for unionized employees

    Cons

    -Non-unionized groups (ie. exploration) do not have compensation or salaries which are on par with other companies in this industry.
    -Promotions tend to be based on seniority rather than merit or abilities.
