    Pros

In general the people are great and there is a determination to get products out and 'do the right thing'.
Having been in the company a long time I can honestly say I've always been keen to get on with the job and never dreaded going into work.

    Cons

The company hasn't really matured from the small company it once was, fire-fighting seems to be the preferred operating method and there is very little progress in process improvement (or creation in some cases)
The company is becoming increasingly silo-ed with fewer capable leaders in the teams so there's greater reliance on a small number of people to hold everything together
Any career development you do will be on your own and you may not see any pay-rise for promotions or greater responsibility. If you are good your pay will fall behind your performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make some meaningful changes to bring the workings of the company under-control - small steps at first, stop trying to implement the latest buzz-words when the basics aren't right, get the foundations sorted before trying to build the house.

Control change within the company. There is too much, too frequently and it is almost exclusively superficial with very little impact.

Finally - look after your top performing staff before they all leave.

    Great people...poorly managed business

Current Employee - Project Manager in Havant, England (UK)

    Pros

Great people, especially the engineering staff who step up time and time again and bail Xyratex projects from difficult situations with little or no support from middle management.

    Cons

No collaboration and teamwork.Lack of motivation and staff generally unhappy about lack of support from the business, senior management on projects.Focus is on getting things done even if it isn't the right thing or right way to do it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is just as important to focus on the internal processes of the business and the employees as it is to increase share holder profitability.Be honest to employees and customers about the strategic vision of the business.

Former Employee - Associate Project Manager in Havant, England (UK)

    Pros

The people were great and there was a good working atmosphere if you avoided the politics .You were allowed to work with minimum supervision as long as job was done.

    Cons

Senior management are dreadful and completely out of touch with their employees. You could only progress if you were one of the "chosen ones" and this was normally based on personality rather than performance, with many managers being unaware of what their employees actually did. There was no recognition or reward for "going the extra mile" and no loyalty to the employees. Without a complete clear out of all Senior a management the business will probably fail within 12 months, being broken up and sold off to make Shareholder profits, with no account for the very hardworking employees. Management had NO people management skills and treated their employees as Liabilities rather than true Assets they are

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resign before they destroy the Company

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Some managers provide great support.

    Cons

Management has trouble getting out of its own way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look beyond your ego. Plan to be a legacy company not a flash in a pan. Should have spent more time and money raising the bar internally than on lowering it on the logo.

A Highly Political and Unpleasant Place to Work

    • Comp & Benefits
    • Work/Life Balance
    • Senior Management
    • Culture & Values
    • Career Opportunities
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Good honest workers generally don't have the skills or disposition for functioning in a highly political environment like Xyratex. Xyratex is a highly political and an unpleasant place to work, making it more difficult to recruit good talent to compete effectively. The company usually buys the talent or expertise it doesn't have inside from the outside; keeps them around long enough to allow knowledge transfer to those who need it; and then throws them out during frequent lay-off cycles. Lots of people who have worked at Xyratex feel discriminated against, abused or unappreciated and often resort following harmful options: Defecting to competition; resorting to sabotaging the company, e.g., by sharing confidential information with competitors or the analysts; becoming emotionally distant and with no interest in the success of the company; and displaying passive-aggressive behaviors, becoming uncooperative, working less or producing substandard results . Key talent frequently quit or are fired from the company

    Cons

A low performing dysfunctional company where most senior management are driven by their own personal agendas.

Too many recruitments, selections and promotions are based on internal political agenda, for example, hiring mediocre friends to guarantee personal loyalty at the expense of other highly performing and more-qualified employees or promoting people to have them work as internal spies and saboteurs.

Compensation is politically driven: Stock options, bonuses and perks are not fairly linked to performance.

A lot of sleazy creeps work there. Argumentative and heated cross-divisions meetings with discussion and language focusing on point scoring and buck-passing rather than sharing responsibility and collaborating to solve the problem is the norm as is “every person for himself”.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look in the mirror. You have met the enemy, and he is you. You have lost the respect of your customers and competitors and former employees.
