    Pros

    You get to work with some great people, who work hard in their jobs, even though they will get no appreciation or recognition from management.

    Cons

    Management couldn't tell you what their staff actually do in a lot of cases. People who were good at the jobs they were doing have been made redundant and people who were barely satisfactory were kept on. This is mainly seen as being being they know the right people. Time and time again, you see people getting promoted to a new job, without the job even being advertised within the company. People will work very hard, day in, day out for little or no recognition and yet, other people could be lacking work, but get a sudden rush of work for a couple of days and get far more recognition for it. There are a lot of people that work hard within a group, working with people who put it very little effort, yet when it comes to bonuses and pay rises, they will be given the same. This leads to those who are hard working having no motivation to carry on working hard. You are "Part of a team" only when it suits management.

    Advice to Management

    Take the time to actually know what your staff are doing and work out who is working hard and who could be doing more. Treat everyone within your department with the same standards. Motivate your staff and give them praise where due.

    Hopefully Seagate will start getting their own people to Xyratex's sites and see how poorly they are run and start to give Xyratex employees some real structure instead of expecting people to be doing jobs that they are not being paid to do.

    Pros

    Flexible working hours;
    Nice working location;
    Incredible engineers and architects;

    Cons

    Engineering and research positions are very low paid;
    Engineers and researchers are treated like shiz;
    There is NO reward or recognition for innovation and quality work;
    Not only you are not getting an appropriate appraisal, managers screw you over and over till you give up!
    There is a small group of time wasters that are after their own absurd political agenda and try very hard to survive;
    If you want to survive here, you have to screw around and bullshiz.
    Ineffective workforce selection.

    Advice to Management

    To Managers:
    Stop playing games, and correct your management. Engineers do not have time and nor have the energy to play along.
    Delegate tasks fairly;
    Link the research to business problems;
    Make research teams and engineering teams collaborate more often;
    Carry out external assessment of the research teams.

    To HR:
    You should take decisive action against any misconduct. Just because somebody has been there for a long time or has a good CV, he/she must NOT be exempted! It will cost you much more in the long run if you don't take swift and quick action;
    Get rid of the time wasters.

    Pros

    Good technical teams, but wait... they're all left... (some got laid off)

    Cons

    Too many less experienced management (some not qualified at all), too less workers to show results (because the only management action is to layoff people and hiring again)

    A company without a unified direction, a full time cut cost style of Tech company.

    Zero supervision on management side, it's like spy agents all over the company that nobody know what are they doing.

    A true fire fighting modus operandi company, hire people settle issues then lay them off.

    As a lower level employee, zero training given (all on job training), zero career advancement (they all hire new people whenever a post is open), bad outlook (with current management all we can see is a bunch of useless argument)

    Advice to Management

    A manager or higher level is to foresee plan and executes with assets on hand to achieve an objective. So if you have too much management people with less worker assets on hand do not talk about achieving anything at all. Remember, technical worker assets are replaceable but experienced one are not hence you are not advancing if you kept laying off people.

    Pros

    In general the people are great and there is a determination to get products out and 'do the right thing'.
    Having been in the company a long time I can honestly say I've always been keen to get on with the job and never dreaded going into work.

    Cons

    The company hasn't really matured from the small company it once was, fire-fighting seems to be the preferred operating method and there is very little progress in process improvement (or creation in some cases)
    The company is becoming increasingly silo-ed with fewer capable leaders in the teams so there's greater reliance on a small number of people to hold everything together
    Any career development you do will be on your own and you may not see any pay-rise for promotions or greater responsibility. If you are good your pay will fall behind your performance.

    Advice to Management

    Make some meaningful changes to bring the workings of the company under-control - small steps at first, stop trying to implement the latest buzz-words when the basics aren't right, get the foundations sorted before trying to build the house.

    Control change within the company. There is too much, too frequently and it is almost exclusively superficial with very little impact.

    Finally - look after your top performing staff before they all leave.

    Pros

    The people were great and there was a good working atmosphere if you avoided the politics .You were allowed to work with minimum supervision as long as job was done.

    Cons

    Senior management are dreadful and completely out of touch with their employees.You could only progress if you were one of the "chosen ones" and this was normally based on personality rather than performance, with many managers being unaware of what their employees actually did. There was no recognition or reward for "going the extra mile" and no loyalty to the employees. Without a complete clear out of all Senior a management the business will probably fail within 12 months, being broken up and sold off to make Shareholder profits, with no account for the very hardworking employees. Management had NO people management skills and treated their employees as Liabilities rather than true Assets they are

    Advice to Management

    Resign before they destroy the Company

    Pros

    Good pay and benefits. Some managers provide great support.

    Cons

    Management has trouble getting out of its own way.

    Advice to Management

    Look beyond your ego. Plan to be a legacy company not a flash in a pan. Should have spent more time and money raising the bar internally than on lowering it on the logo.
