Current Employee – been working at YMCA Twin Cities full-time for more than a year
Pros – Free membership and discounted program fees.
Cons – Long hours, including many evenings and weekends. Constantly working (email, phone calls) and compensation definitely does not reflect this. Responsibilities get dumped on you by senior leadership and there's little to no appreciation for the time and efforts you put into your work. There is not a good work-life balance. The Y likes to think they're a superior employer by offering generous PTO but then you can never take/use it.
Advice to Senior Management – Take the time to genuinely listen to your Program Directors. They're the ones working the front lines (with their part time staff). They have the best insight as to what's going well and what's not. Don't assume and then make executive decisions that negatively affect the programs and operations.

Current Employee – been working at YMCA Twin Cities full-time for more than a year
Pros – Good in theory. Free health club membership. Average benefits. Started out okay but quickly took a turn for the worse. Decent retirement plan after two years.
Cons – My experience working for the y as a child care teacher was incredibly disappointing. For a non profit that promotes caring, honesty, and respect I am shocked at the lack of support and appreciation and general respect I experienced. It was a work enviornment that fostered workplace bullying, protected poor performing employees, and avoided addressing problems at all cost. Probably the worst company I have worked for. I watched all the great employees quit and all the poor employees recieve protection. Glad to move on to a new employer and feel appreciated again.
Advice to Senior Management – Start recognizing and tackling some of the issues that are crippling your child care program.

Current Employee – been working at YMCA Twin Cities
Pros – Free gym membership, and discounted membership for family members. Very community oriented goal to reach out to others specifically through grants to those who can't afford memberships
Cons – Lack of oversight of employees, specifically in the aquatics department. Disconnect between the branches, from the directors to their managers and from managers to their employees.
