Pros
Good benefits and you can accrue a lot of vacation time. Company name looks good on a resume. You'll get a solid understanding of SEM best practices.
Cons
Too many mid level managers and lack of overall focus. Very tedious and subjective year-end performance reviews. Burn out factor is very high.
Advice to Senior Management
Take some initiative and lead. I haven't worked there in over 3 years, but some old friends indicate that things haven't gotten any better.
Pros
great benefits
great brand name
wear jeans
Cons
management
laying off people
to corporate
hire competent people
micro management
Advice to Senior Management
start listening to employees
Pros
Benefits and salary are better than what most companies are providing.
Cons
This is not a creative place to work. There are a lot of loafers in all areas who do very little for what they are paid. If you strive to live under the radar and do not care about what you are working on, then this may be the place for you. If you want to do something more satisfying and creative, then do not work here.
Advice to Senior Management
Realize that your role is to lead, inspire and improve the lives of those who report to you. You should not take your role lightly.
Pros
1) good/decent pay
2) lots of bright, intelligent people to work with
3) good opportunities for career growth if you have initiative
4) good opportunities to learn, if you have initiative
Cons
1) always a firefight, every day
2) lots of stupid people to work with (law of averages)
3) at the time i was there, the layoff situation/notices was entirely demoralizing
4) executive management (starting with filo & yang, then all their cronies, and finally carol) at yahoo is such a joke. they are disinterested in any of their employees, only mindful of their personal agendas. sadly, things got done by extremely motivated middle management and below--anyway--despite the idiocy from the top
Advice to Senior Management
it's a sinking ship. everyone knows
Pros
Fun and place to work
Cons
No advancement opportunities and job satisfaction.
Advice to Senior Management
Higher pay to employees.
Pros
Medical Benefits
Time off policy
Free coffee and soda!
Regular employee recognition events
Cons
Long commute for me
Sometimes difficult to move up in the same org.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep the company focused on our core principles and values.
Pros
Lots of good people to work with, including some very sharp, talented developers. For example, internal technical mailing lists were very educational.
Cons
Lots of murky politics at higher levels of management, lack of transparency about upper management's decision making, and apparently arbitrary decisions handed down.
Advice to Senior Management
Figure out who you want Yahoo to be and what you want it to do, and make it clear to the employees what's going on. That doesn't mean holding bi-weekly content-free "all hands" meetings, though.
Pros
Good benefits and office space
Cons
Lack of vision and strategy from the Exec mgmt
Terrible internal tools and processes
Advice to Senior Management
Don't always focus on the current quarter, look out to the longer time horizon and make your decisions based on that.
Pros
- Flexible hours if need be. You can really manage your own schedule and people do respect it, or stay quiet about.
- Cross-functional teams are mostly beneficial to everyone involved.
Cons
- Constant rumors of layoffs
- Not bringing innovative products to market
- Feeling of stagnation
- Exec shuffles never end
Advice to Senior Management
- Stop the incessant re-orgs
- Hire senior management in the location were the team actually resides
- Start innovating
Pros
You can get away with not doing anything all day if you play your cards right.
Cons
The company is like a rudderless ship, lost in the ocean. It almost feels like senior management decides strategy on a trial and error basis. Re-orgs are constant. I myself had 4 different managers in one year. Some people had up to 7 different managers that same year. Politics and bureaucracy dominates everything.
Advice to Senior Management
Get a clue.
