The payments department will make you work like a slave.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Yahoo part-time

ProsThere are some smart people there and its great to work with smart people.

ConsLeadership has no idea of work life balance. Make you slog like a slave and then have the gall to say that 'this is not enough dedication'. People work 12 hours easy and apparantly thats not enough. Plus promotions are rare.

Toxic experience

Software Engineering Manager (Former Employee)
Palo Alto, CA

I worked at Yahoo full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSome of the people I worked with were amazing. The rest were there to take up space and collect a paycheck.

ConsTerrible place to work. Toxic environment. Total pressure cooker. The harder you work, the more they dump on you. Many employees slide under the radar. Only saving grace was that most of the work horses survived the frequent and MASSIVE layoffs.

Can Yahoo be great again? Maybe ... but it will take a long time to find out

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Sunnyvale, CA

I have been working at Yahoo as an intern for less than a year

ProsStill have passionate and talented people. Reinvigoration under MM is inspiring. Cool projects in the works. Finding the path back to being a true engineering company (from becoming a media company). Four stars for new direction and new management. Three stars for where they are today.

ConsThe memory of Yahoo as a great company is distant -- and the path to getting back to greatness is long. Lots of good initiative but turnover and the inability to attract the very very best is a hangup that will make getting there longer than it should (if they can). Some amazing projects and developments (like Pipes) don't seem to get the attention love and traction they deserve. Don't let Yahoo be a place where cool projects die!

I have been working at Yahoo full-time for more than 3 years

ProsTremendous improvements in Branding! Great Food, perks & opportunities for innovation. Recognition for your hard-work will depend on which group you are in and the leader of that group.

ConsIn some groups there is no work-life balance! Aggressive schedule of the projects stresses out every one and quality of the product is compromised at times, to meet deadlines.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you are doing but pay close attention to the quality of the products while delivering projects as per aggressive schedule

Not so great

Media Account Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Yahoo full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat environment, great people. Opportunities of growth if located in a hub.

ConsIt was very misleading and discouraging. The strategy changed several time, along with having 3 CEOs during my short tenure at the company. This lead to a lot of miscommunication, change of direction for my job and even the closure of the market I was reporting into.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate more, and be straight forward with employees

Growth company in an exciting and growing industry

Senior Manager, Data Insights (Current Employee)

I have been working at Yahoo full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFlexible hours, relaxing working environment, collaboration among different teams, competitive compensation package, free food and many employee perks, innovative and creative.

ConsLoss of focus in some areas, slow execution, evaluation and reward process not so effective, engineering instead of product driven.

Advice to Senior ManagementFlatten the hierarchy structure, so communication become easier and more effective. Focus more on execution. Give more support to product managers. Have better alignment among different organization units.
