Yahoo! Vice President in Sunnyvale, CA:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

One of the centers of the internet world Was THE center in 1998.
Lots of groups to work in, pretty good freedom to move around
Good growth opportunity in Engineering

Cons

Jerry and Sue were the wrong people to lead the company. That's fixed now, and friends there seem much more optimistic.
Decision making was awful. Generally unclear who made the decision, and thus 4 people tried to make it and nobody followed anything.
Matrix organization gave too much power to Product Mgmt. Engineering had no budget, but had to "work with" (read beg) product for any headcount needed. Hard to get people staffed on maintenance and code cleanup/repair (technical debt) projects.

Advice to Senior Management

Be better than the old management. Make quick decisions and make them stick. Balance the responsibility between Eng and PM.

Yahoo! Product Marketing Manager:   (Past Employee - 2007)

0 of 1 people found this helpful

Pros

Relatively high profile company with huge audience and thus impact on consumers. Progressive work environment. Major player in the Internet sector, with international scope and multiple category leading services.

Cons

Management as not unified on company strategy. There were many functional areas with over-lapping responsibilities. This led to some organization confusion, and hindered the company's ability to introduce new products. Too much emphasis on "cool/fun".

Advice to Senior Management

Simplify the core business.

Pros

Not too much stress. Work pace is not too fast. Salary is OK. This is just the kind of big companies, you know.

Cons

Well, as a big company, it sort of lacks passion. You don't see that kind of energy you can see in start ups.

Advice to Senior Management

I think the high level management needs more innovation and more accurate vision about future plans. Otherwise, it's hard for such a big company to compete with its rivals.

2) fun environment
3) you are free to evaluate your manager and approach senior management.
4) easy accessibility to senior managers.
5) Open to internal criticism
6) work place is exceptionally good,

Cons

1) You start loving the work more than anything, kind of spoils your other desires.
2) too many people can disrupt a process as every one can voice there concerns

Advice to Senior Management

Pros

I enjoyed starting year, but probably not a good place to stay long-term

Cons

lack of focus from management.

Advice to Senior Management

Yahoo! is a technology organization, with a strong sales support. We seem to be moving to a sales organization, with a strong technology support, which, IMHO is not a good direction.

Yahoo! Anonymous:   (Past Employee - 2009)

Pros

potential to move around the organization into different functions, smart colleagues, opens doors into media/tech industry, respect for work/life balance, good benefits

Cons

organizational chaos, ongoing reorgs present obstacles to getting things done, growing pains, people are not 100% invested or motivated to do their best work

Advice to Senior Management

Give subordinates more clarity AND consistency on what the big picture/vision is, so that people are empowered to make valuable contributions to the company.

Yahoo! Manager in Sunnyvale, CA:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Free coffee, the cafe food is good and reasonably priced. Also, the Year End party is great. Smart co-workers. Hack Day rocks.

Cons

The recent layoffs seemed random (except when they seemed overtly malicious) and we lost some great people which reinforced the notion that Yahoo is no longer a place where if you work hard and do good work, you'll be rewarded.
The environment is passive-aggressive - if a co-worker doesn't like the request you made then they just ignore your email.

Advice to Senior Management

Senior management blew it by not taking the original deal to sell the company to Microsoft. Now we're stuck with a revenue sharing "opportunity" that will mean more layoffs and less technical challenges.

Pros

Awesome atmosphere. Great perks. Nice people. You meet a lot of smart people out here who are on the cutting edge of technology and know what it means to be in the hi-tech industry.

Cons

The food is mediocre. It is very hard to get noticed in Yahoo!, considering it is such a big company.

Advice to Senior Management

More concentrated leadership would be advisable. Managers need to be more in touch with their underlings, and Yahoo! as a whole needs to be more organized.

meh

Pros

Will look nice on my resume

Cons

technology is barely out of the 90s
reorgs that don't do much
they either have no process or way too much process for everything... usually both
can't pick a direction, technology, etc and actually see it through

Advice to Senior Management

make decisions and move forward.
