Strong developers, some very clever people in the ranks, but poor leadership.

I worked at Yahoo full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The culture is great in the London office, there's good opportunity for professional growth including encouragement to go to many conferences and to experiment with new technologies and ideas, and some great perks. Many of the developers are incredibly smart.

    Cons

The company is focused around the head office in California, to the point where they can't imagine anyone contributing from outside. And there's a very heavy-handed technical leadership who try to micromanage every process of all teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people the freedom to use the best tools for them to do their job, not the best tools for Yahoo's leadership. If you have to force people to use something, look at why people resist so much and consider if that product really is going to help them do their job. If you need all employees to dogfood something, to the point where you can't cope with the level of feedback, then something is very wrong in that product's development process.

Also be aware that most of the technical talent in the world isn't in Silicon Valley and maybe doesn't want to go there - having a lot of financial and emotional investment in other development offices in other regions, or even allowing people to work from home, would be a massive benefit to Yahoo.

I worked at Yahoo full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible working, good work environment, casual and fun. Working at yahoo was like being back at university, casual, lots of change and evolution

    Cons

Lack of strategic vision--Yahoo doesn't know what it wants to be. The culture isn't united, it's the sum of all the businesses which make it up, so it's hard to relate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share your strategic vision with the staff, ensure that everyone knows what role they have to play in executing that vision.

I have been working at Yahoo as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic working environment, great people to work with, fun atmosphere and a good work/life balance, with good benefits and perks

    Cons

Bad management, disorganised, no structure and lack of support for staff. Lots of bureaucracy, red tape, hard to get anything done as the U.S govern most of the UK policies. Bad communication from the top tier management. Management don't support or encourage their staff. Don't understand or allow staff to embrace the culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Monitor and review your staff to ensure they are providing the right support for their staff. As when I was employed,

I worked at Yahoo full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of talented people, very high profile projects to work on. Instead of having to pretend you work to scale, it is very much a daily given that you have to.

    Cons

Lots of hierarchy, many middle managers battle another by trying to get lots of people reporting to them, which means you might get tossed around a lot without being able to leave your mark in a project and fully understand it before you move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Yahoo full-time

    Pros

Great place to work. Great benefits. Co-workers are genuinely nice people. Much less political wrangling than I've experienced at some other places where I've worked. Lots of great new products and content. It is an exciting place to work and they value their employees.

    Cons

It is an American company, so if you work in EMEA, it is sometimes challenging to keep track of the latest developments that are happening in the US. This issue is not really specific to Yahoo, but is a basic challenge when working in the UK for an international company that is head-quartered in the USA.

    Pros

big name, good perks, clever people, flexible hours, potential to work from home if you need to any given day

    Cons

unfortunately the company appears to have lid a bit since 2000, hanging onto ploys to get pageviews and really pushing for search share with lazy tactics
