Pros
Low bureaucracy
Smart team of engineers - one always learns new technology and new ideas
Fair compensation - comparable to the market
Good health and vacation benefits
Startup culture not going away yet
Cons
Stock options suck
Leadership fails to grow the company
Advice to Senior Management
Set targets for yourselves for the following two, announce your targets to employees, let all compare your targets to your achievements at the end of quarter/year. Don't play with words please.
Search market share
Revenue growth
Pros
Good, mature company where you can get experience at scale. Given the audience trends that are not in Yahoo!'s favor, beware that you stay too long. Its good to have on your resume and for some high impact training, but leverage their brand for a good position at a company that's actually growing as soon as you can.
Cons
Poor executive team leadership (what is the strategy to win back the audience share of mind from consumers?).
Executives struggle to get aligned behind a corporate vision and strategy, because it appears that they can't agree on an actionable one.
Advice to Senior Management
Simplify, simplify, simplify. Make strategic goals actionable and measurable. Make more command decisions--don't worry, the troops WANT this to happen to improve traction; they won't see it as dictatorial!
Pros
Good benefits and you can accrue a lot of vacation time. Company name looks good on a resume. You'll get a solid understanding of SEM best practices.
Cons
Too many mid level managers and lack of overall focus. Very tedious and subjective year-end performance reviews. Burn out factor is very high.
Advice to Senior Management
Take some initiative and lead. I haven't worked there in over 3 years, but some old friends indicate that things haven't gotten any better.
Pros
Some nice people.
Coffee.
Reasonable compensation, after waiting 5 years for them to adjust to market.
Cons
Mid-management only focused on keeping their jobs. Constant re-orgs based on same.
Too many managers and absurd levels of micro-management.
Up to 6 meetings a day, to give the appearance of accomplishing something.
No job security.
Seniority, loyalty and hard work mean nothing.
Cannot complain to anyone about anything, including HR. The walls have ears.
Favoritism and retaliation rules.
Raises and promotions denied for years on end, unless you're a suckup.
Painful all-hands meetings full of happy talk and not-so-happy remarks about employee effort.
Morale worse than ever - fear and depression walk the halls, hidden behind smile-masks.
Other than that, it's a cool place to work.
Advice to Senior Management
Instead of laying off people who work their hearts out, please trim the many hundreds of bureaucrats.
Pros
good balanced life , good perks, fun enviornment, lot of amenities, young crowd, access to top quality machinery, good vibe from peers
Cons
politics, often changing management causes lot of stir, lots of layers, unneccessary rules and regulations , lack of employee support by HR
Pros
great benefits
great brand name
wear jeans
Cons
management
laying off people
to corporate
hire competent people
micro management
Advice to Senior Management
start listening to employees
Pros
Benefits and salary are better than what most companies are providing.
Cons
This is not a creative place to work. There are a lot of loafers in all areas who do very little for what they are paid. If you strive to live under the radar and do not care about what you are working on, then this may be the place for you. If you want to do something more satisfying and creative, then do not work here.
Advice to Senior Management
Realize that your role is to lead, inspire and improve the lives of those who report to you. You should not take your role lightly.
Pros
tons of hands on experience, fun corporate culture and some very nice people. You learn a ton about the industry and get to meet a lot of helpful people; great experiece.
Cons
Sometimes it could get boring and redundant. Work could get overloaded and some long hours. Disorganization sometimes and lack of guidance was a common issue. Other than that, great job.
Advice to Senior Management
I would hire more people so work is spread out more evenly and people don't get overwhelmed. Continue to have speakers and important people talk, helps build corporate culture
Pros
1) good/decent pay
2) lots of bright, intelligent people to work with
3) good opportunities for career growth if you have initiative
4) good opportunities to learn, if you have initiative
Cons
1) always a firefight, every day
2) lots of stupid people to work with (law of averages)
3) at the time i was there, the layoff situation/notices was entirely demoralizing
4) executive management (starting with filo & yang, then all their cronies, and finally carol) at yahoo is such a joke. they are disinterested in any of their employees, only mindful of their personal agendas. sadly, things got done by extremely motivated middle management and below--anyway--despite the idiocy from the top
Advice to Senior Management
it's a sinking ship. everyone knows
Pros
Fun and place to work
Cons
No advancement opportunities and job satisfaction.
Advice to Senior Management
Higher pay to employees.
