    Pros

    Great working environment, awesome benefits

    Cons

Political. Good powerpoints are rewarded more than good ideas.

    Advice to Management

Get out of Building A and mix with the people more.

    Pros

Lots of ways to learn from the best in the industry.
    Free food.
    Nice people in general.
    Good benefits and amenties

    Cons

    Not challenging enough.
Lots of mid-level management - which leads to micro management of tasks
I ran into an issue where it was very difficult to do anything that the senior engineer in the team didn't 'think correct' (and highly voted stackoverflow answers couldn't convince him either).

    Advice to Management

Be transparent and genuine. Or don't claim to be transparent. Don't disillusion your employees.
Trust your engineers, they're not just coding monkeys.

    Pros

    Creative smart coworkers, exciting work.

    Cons

I stayed around longer than some CEOs. Dislike Marissa Meyers and her WFH thing was using a blunt tool to fix a more subtle management problem.

    Advice to Management

I'd just tell them to no forget the front page is the company's most valuable asset (in terms of future growth) and they should stop this stupid "magazine" idea. Nobody cares.

  5. Slightly chaotic with a mix of excellent and mediocre people, Yahoo is full of opportunities to make a difference

    Pros

Some excellent people, still a good brand, maybe slightly easier to get a job there and career progression opportunities for people who are good at achieving results despite mediocre support and ancient systems

    Cons

20 years of tech debt and a reluctance to deal with it, 7 years of negative press and hundreds (or more) of highly talented but burnt-out idealists who are now cynical.

    Advice to Management

Stop acting afraid to sacrifice short term toxic revenue for strategic gains. Spend more than 12 months on a strategy. Locate your top talent and find ways to rejuvenate them while helping the bottom talent out the door.

    Pros

Great campus, centrally located to South Bay area, flexible WFH policy (I worked there from 2008-2012), great benefits for mothers-to-be, cafeteria food was good, ample parking, great gym and perks, good people.

    Cons

Too much change in organization (went through 3 CEO's while I was there), too many lay offs, cloak of secrecy and lack of transparency.

    Advice to Management

Have a more flexible WFH policy (esp for parents with young children), be more transparent in messaging to employees, and be open to change.

Also, before moving teams to Nebraska (because labor is cheaper there), ensure they can do the job. When I was laid off, I was sent the wrong amount for my severance check (over $230k wrong). It wasn't until I called and mentioned the error that they realized they made a mistake, with no gratitude for my honesty. I then had to wait an additional 2 weeks for the correct severance check.

    Pros

Smart, fun, great people who are hugely dedicated to help.

    Cons

Upper management scattered and consistently inconsistent. The rich get richer.

    Advice to Management

Share the wealth. Just saying you're the best place to work doesn't make it so.

    Pros

Since Marissa Mayer because the CEO, morale got much better -- free food, transparency during weekly company-wide meetings, conference/travel budget, tons of events and flexible work hours have all helped the employees morale and passion for the company.

    Cons

Middle management is terrible. I have seen people get promoted to managers because they had the loudest mouths or that there was no one better for the job -- not necessarily because they had the best skill set. Also, Marissa and her executive staff are getting less trustworthy these days. With the implementation of the QPR system: sticking every employee on a bell curve to judge how they compare to others every quarter and where the unlucky ones who end up at the bottom of the bell curve usually get booted out even if they performed highly, employees are often left confused and disgruntled.

    Advice to Management

Get a better system in to promote middle managers, get rid of that QPR system and be more transparent when it comes to layoffs.

    Pros

The benefits are excellent, the salary is above industry average, the food is awesome and the ability to grown from within is great.

    Cons

Management has a tendency to blindside people with layoffs, employee moral has been pretty low for the past year. The most dreaded thing about Yahoo is the QPR (oooooh how I hated that) there is a constant need to evaluate and reevaluate employees. It was really depressing to see hard-working people get laid-off consistently.

    Advice to Management

    Scrap the QPR!

Acknowledge layoffs, stop letting go of quality people if at all possible.

    Pros

    Great benefits
There is lots of great engineers working at yahoo!
You can contribute to some open source projects.
There is some collaboration between teams but not much.
The free food is very good

    Cons

The worst part of yahoo is because is the constant layoffs. I just this month they fired some good developers for no reason and people don't even get a notice before being fired.

Every week there is at lest 30 new hires, new people take time to get up to speed and when they do they could be fired without even knowing why.

Many times there are goals that conflict with each other, the management it self is very bad.

    Advice to Management

Stop firing good people, give constant feedback and help the team to deliver their goals.

    Pros

    -free food, free phone

-lots of cool events on site

    Cons

-transparent qpr makes more harm than it helps. This kills teamwork and promotes individualism.

-internal tool support is a joke. They have zero to none knowledge base page to get you started with an internal. If any was there, they are extremely old and outdated.

-no dedicated qa, you need to take that qa role as well as a developer.

-a hell hole of politics, promotion measured solely on how much you express yourself verbally instead of how much work you get done which is totally unfair if you are taking an engineering role.
