Pros
flexible work schedule, friendly working environment. do not have to do a lot work at night or weekend. overall ok
Cons
promotion is not easy to get. talent people leaving yahoo. high turn over rate. management decision change frequently. not feel very stable.
Advice to Senior Management
more respect to engineers. make decision making process more open to engineers. more compensation. more and more and more consistent strategy.
Pros
Great work environment where you could learn a lot of newnew and latest technologies and get to do hands on work. Casual and fun work environment
Cons
Yahoo gets frequently compared with google which is not always pleasant. Big company and intearaction across different teams is not that great sometimes.
Advice to Senior Management
Yahoo should try to achieve quick decision making. A lot of work still need to be done for removing layers of managers.
Pros
Learn how to build truly scalable software
Work with lots of smart people
Learn a lot about the internet advertising business
Cons
Constant reorgs
Poor work/life balance of a startup without the upside of company growth
Low morale in the advertising technology group
"Build everything ourselves" software development mentality
Advice to Senior Management
Ensure that middle management has the time and incentive to clearly communicate the business reasons for project priorities and schedules, and work more actively to engage the folks who are actually doing the work.
Pros
- Good salary
- Good perks
- Friendly and intelligent coworkers
- Very open, executives very approachable and ready to listen
Cons
- Low morale in search and advertising groups
- Sometimes senior management lacks in providing direction
- Too many reorgs
Advice to Senior Management
- Yahoo can still get its glory back, but please set up the environment which is conduicive. Too many reorgs cause a lot of confusion between engineers and PMs working on projects.
- Encourage the culture to take risks. We seem to have lost it over last couple of years.
Pros
Generally work life balance at Yahoo! is good except for 20 percent of the jobs. You get good exposure to applications running at very high load.
Cons
Low salary, low hikes, low bonuses and at 20 percent of the jobs horrible work life balance. Is frankly a 3rd tier company i think, Not even second tier.
Advice to Senior Management
The company needs to make better use of the very good quality of engineers it has. Needs to restructure drastically, cut down on management, and increase the responsiblities and scope of work that the engineers do.
Pros
Salary and if you need a job, and maybe learn a few things about Internet Technology.
Cons
Chaotic and hectic place. Lower level and middle managers are promoted only by tenure and not necessarily by knowledge or management skill. Majority of managers seen have zero management skill. Thus, the place is very chaotic and lack of discipline and process. They can improve by hire professional managers to be managers, instead of some technie as the lesson learned at the healm, Jerry Yang. He was a good Techny guy, but not good in management the company. Leave that to the pro, Carol Bartz. The same should be true for lower level managers and directors. We need professionally trained managers in those position to make it a better place to work.
Too many buddy-buddy groupies. If you are an outsider, good luck trying to break the inner circle, as it is pretty well molded and can interfere with real decision making and making the right choice for the good of the company, instead of covering up for the buddies.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire professional managers for respective area, not just promote bunch of technies, who have no management skill, experience and personal skill in dealing with problems and personel.
More communication from top down, especially within same department.
Need to improve process and hire qualified personnel, rather than hire unqualified buddies of buddies, just to prevent them from getting sent back..
Pros
Freedom to think big, lot of smart people to work with, No politics - freedom to talk to any executive about issues affecting Yahoo
Cons
Low morale on Search/Advertising, No "big wins" in recent past, No global platforms - takes too long for things to happen worldwide
Advice to Senior Management
Better road maps for what after MSFT transition, Clear strategy on what is Yahoo's core competence, Better integration on acquisitions, clarity on what is part of our business going forward and what is not.
Pros
Cutting edge technology, good environment, nice people, good perks, life/work balance, food, shuttle, bonuses, good reputation and good thing to put in your resume.
Cons
Depending on your manager and group, you may or may not like it and feel like you are on your own. Some people are used to being told what to do at all times, some dont.
Advice to Senior Management
I do not have any input with regards to management as I had to work for many managers at the time.
Pros
Reputation (current and former)
Smart people around you
Many projects to work on or learn about
Free coffee bar!
Many free/affordable commute options
Cons
A lot of politics (in recent years)
Uncertainity in face of competition from Google
Innovation Stagnation
Advice to Senior Management
Devote more time to employee innovation
Allow engineers/PMs more time to market bold new ideas
Pros
Compensation is fair. Flexible working hours. Plenty of opportunity to learn, either through various projects or training. Work and life balance in general is good.
Cons
There is no clear vision from corporate executives.
Company is running like a start-up company but lack of start-up's efficiency.
Too many management levels and non-productive employees.
Advice to Senior Management
Clear vision for the company is badly needed.
Prioritize projects inside the company; cut low priority projects, and invest on key projects/products.
Improve management efficiency.
