Great place to work. Lots of smart people

    Principal Scientist (Former Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsA very focused company on the web, yet has many successful products that truly delights many users everyday. Still one of the most successful companies in the internet space.

ConsSilos within the company is widespread. Working with remote teams is harder than it should be. Weak presence in many international markets

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employee well. They are your biggest asset.

    Pretty good environment

    Search Analyst (Former Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsThe company tries to take care of miscellaneous stuff for employees so that we could focus more on the project or tasks at hands.

ConsWhen the deadline gets closer, the pressure builds up. But, I guess that doesn't apply only to Yahoo but many other companies in the simily

    Great experience working here!

    Search Content Analyst (Former Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsThe work culture and teams I worked with were great. This was my first time working in a large company and I was able to absorb much information from my peers and management.

ConsI was working here during the lay offs and it was quite unfortunate to see many people I worked with get laid off. It's a good place to work at, but more attention should be given to the kind of projects that we focused on.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Management could have a better, clearer long-term vision in mind for the projects we worked on and communicate that clearly to its teams.

Good benefits, but way too much incompetent managers that stand in the way of innovation

    Principal Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

    Pros* Top notch benefits
    * Free hand-made, Starbucks-like coffee (and now even full food, I hear)
    * Fun events for employees and family
    * Well known brand

Cons* Way too many (~7) levels of management
    * Incompetent managers that are clueless about what their job really is
    * Agile software development limited to isolated pockets
    * Waterfall process causing constant fire drills
    * Extreme turnover and low morale

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of at least 75% of the (especially lower and middle) management and try to keep those few managers that know what they're supposed to do and how to do it.

Used to be where greatness goes to die; but maybe Marissa Mayer can change that.

    Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsYahoo properties are visited by hundreds of millions of people every day. Compensation is good. Freebies abound.

ConsYahoo lost almost all of its A players, thanks to managerial incompetence and territorialism. This eventually infected every part of the company. Winning ideas did not just fail to thrive, they were actively hunted down and killed. Marissa Mayer may be changing all that - finally.

Advice to Senior ManagementI have no advice other than what Marissa Mayer is doing already. Yahoo needed someone to make tough choices, update the culture and technology, and focus on products again, and that's what she's doing.
