Pros
great company and environment, you get a chance to work with great skilled people.
Cons
management keeps changing. focus of company's direction keeps changing.
Advice to Senior Management
focus on right products and right practices.
Pros
Large campus perks (gym, cafeteria, IT onsite support - all superb), health and 401k matching benefits, commuting support (shuttles and financial),
Cons
Leadership, planning, communication, documentation, process, follow-through all lacking.
Advice to Senior Management
Plan. Document. Communicate. Follow-through.
Pros
- Great benefits like insurance, 401K etc.
- Good friendly people
- Treats employees well and with respect
- decent brand
Cons
- going downhill - it has been like that for a few years now
- way too complex, difficult to get things done
Advice to Senior Management
- Stop the recurring cycle of layoffs and then going on a hiring binge
- Find ways to reduce complexity
Pros
People are friendly and warm. Work on the in things
Cons
Too many re-orgs. Need to prove to a new guy every 3 months. Too many silos., silos, silos
Advice to Senior Management
Break the silos...create consolidated teams that are end to end...execution will be faster and better. Employees will have more job satisfaction and will find new interesting challenges. Just doing scrum / agile is meaningless when you have so many silos
Pros
good employees .. really nice work culture .. not much processes to hassle you .. lot to learn
Cons
no direction .. senior management sucks .. compensation is not good .. lots of meetings .. product managers really a drag for engineering
Pros
It is possible to separate your personal and professional life. Awesome engineers always willing to help and contribute. Nice campus.
Cons
Several reorgs and layoffs yearly making immigrant life (those requesting a green card to stay) miserable. Reactive talent retention and terrible compensation adjustment policy, one got to announce s/he is leaving in order to get a decent $.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop treating engineers as linear people. Everyone is different and it is not fair to adjust compensation equally when some are clearly performing better than others. Stop reorgs and layoffs
Pros
Most people there are trying to do the right thing.
There's a very low schmuck factor.
Getting experience with the Billions-scale traffic is priceless experience
Management is TRYING to undo many years of aimless decision-making
Some of the most annoying legacy employees are moving on or being moved aside
Blake and Carol are taking on sacred cows and improving alignment among the teams.
Cons
There's only a half-plan right now... it's encouraging but not enough.
No consistent approach to engineering, product management or program management. Don't come to Yahoo expecting to learn a Yahoo-way... there isn't one. SDLC is handled completely differently in different orgs, which makes it difficult to execute on cross-company initiatives.
Advice to Senior Management
The company needs to be willing to impose process on people even if they don't want it.
The company should demand weekly or monthly releases...3-6 month cycle in some areas to release simple features is unacceptable.
Pros
Good people and smart people
Cons
senior management appears risk adverse. Difficult to steer a larger company quickly.
Advice to Senior Management
If Yahoo is to remain a growth company new businesses will need to be aquired or cultivated from within. When growing from within think long term and don't grow a group 300% and expect it to produce game changing revenue immediately.
Pros
Very talented people and felt like you were part of a community.
Cons
Lack of focus on business and core competencies
Advice to Senior Management
Business focus
Pros
+ work-life balance
+ great benefits, compensation package
+ amazing works
+ very relaxed environment
+ company culture is imbued thoroughly
Cons
+ how can I become a millionaire if keep working at Yahoo during my 20s ?
Advice to Senior Management
Be more adventurous outside of the social fads, such as enterprise cloud computing, mobile development, and more.
