It is a very positive experience working at YNHH. The hospital works hard to reward staff.

Current Employee - Patient and Family Advisor for the YNHH/Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, CT

    Pros

YNHH is the forth largest hospital in the USA. Yale's culture is one of working hard to continue to exceed patients' expectations.

    Cons

Because YNHH is the forth largest hospital in the country, slip-ups do occur. For instance, It was brought to our attention that there was dried blood drops in one of the pre-op nooks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to encourage staff to feel free to voice their discontentment with various problems within the workplace.

    Pros

A large organization with many different employment opportunities

    Cons

Not a lot of opportunity to advance. Though internal postings are frequent within the organization, there are some situations where people are held back simply because it would be difficult to find someone to replace them if their shift is unusual. (for example, part time, or a few days a week)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide the same benefits to all employees. Don't make employees use PTO when offices close for bad weather.
With such a widespread organization, based in the health field, it would be wonderful if the employees had access to the physicians and hospitals that are part of the business. Health care could be offset and the cost wouldn't be half as expensive as providing health insurance to the entire base.

    Pros

The organization is stabile and growing.

    Cons

Not enough hours in the day to accomplish all that needs to be done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more entry level positions to allow seasoned employees to concentrate on more strategic work, rather than getting bogged down with clerical and basic tasks.

Current Employee - IT Manager in North Haven, CT

    Pros

Good work life balance, little stress but it depends who you work for. You can't get fired, even if you are really bad at your job.

    Cons

No turnover in IT, most managers have been there forever. Extremely low pay increases, even for top performers. The higher you go up in your salary band, the less pay increase opportunity you will receive. Very hard to move up because there is little turnover, most management has been there for years in the same positions. They have a complete monopoly on the entire New Haven area so are pushing salaries down. Unless you move there is little else out there. They are slashing the pension benefits. All money is funneled to the top executives. No trickle down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer better pay increases to top performers, else they will just leave and you will be stuck with just the ones that are content to punch a 9-5 job and nothing else.
