I have been working at Yale School of Management full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment, great benefits, great hours.

    Cons

HR doesn't always manage their assets well. Definitely have to advocate for yourself.

    Advice to Management

Have a clearer path from the higher C&T levels to M&P. Recognize those who have career ambitions and be more active in working with them to achieve their goals. Sometimes saying 'Come talk to me if you need anything' isn't enough.

I have been working at Yale School of Management full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Like any corporation--Pitney-Bowes, IBM, Exxon, whatever--SOM has a great facility with lots of smart people and lots of support and good benefits.

    Cons

SOM has lots of bureaucracy and little understanding of the true talents of people. You can be talented in a whole variety of ways, but no one will notice. They want you do do your job and not look beyond it. Such a shame, because lots of people could offer lots more value.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the management stuff you teach in the classroom. Deal with the stagnant status system, the hierarchy, the PC mumbo-jumbo. Get out and get to know people. Not just in a formal "hey how we all doing ... we value you ... we all work together for a great cause" kind of way.

    Pros

You have the opportunity to work with experienced and collaborative colleagues, meet employers across a breadth of industries and interface with intelligent, hard working students.

    Cons

Changing priorities and lack of overarching strategy result in a reactive organization more focused on tactical execution than long-term impact

I worked at Yale School of Management full-time

    Pros

Working as an employee of the greater Yale University is generally very impressive on your resume. Great employee benefits. The new dean seems fair, but he is unaware of staff issues/concerns (

    Cons

Lacks opportunity for promotion, compensation inadequate but benefits help, work/life balance is among the worst I've experienced in career.

    Advice to Management

Serious consideration should be given to addressing lack of career promotion/progression and development as well as aligning advertised work/life balance with the reality of the office culture for SOM staff. A forum should be created without the next two layers of management (associate deans and directors) so he can hear directly from staff about their issues/concerns/perceptions and hold his management staff accountable for addressing them without employees fearing retaliation.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Yale School of Management full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Bright engaged faculty, fairly decent students. A genuine desire to change how business schools operate with a very unique curriculum.

    Cons

Abysmal senior management. Politics and more politics with almost no desire to enhance education. Completely self serving with people who are only out for themselves.

    Advice to Management

The alumni and students should revolt, get rid of the Dean and his direct reports and fight for change. It's a great school that is plagued by bitterness and a terrible administration.

    Pros

Great workplace atmosphere. Always working with interesting and engaging people. Not routine. Challenging at times, but that's a good thing. Managers are very flexible when it comes to time off for personal needs.

    Cons

The work load et's a little slow/boring in the summer. Though this does balance out some of the more hectic times.

    Advice to Management

Offer more work life and//or continuing education courses. These are valuable in terms of challenging and encouraging professional growth for employees.
