I worked at Yankee Candle part-time

    Pros

The only pro of working here is the discount- which wasn't much of a discount to begin with. This discount did however come in handy around holidays for gifts.

    Cons

The management was catty and very unprofessional. The managers would create and perpetuate drama between the staff. Another con was that you absolutely needed to have a doctor's note in order to call out sick. Nevermind if you were sick with something like a stomach virus where you don't actually need to go to the doctor- you had to have a note.

    Advice to Management

The management needs to be more professional and prevent drama from happening in their store rather than create it and perpetuate it.

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Simple job, relatively low stress, fairly quick to learn products and procedures. Fun place to work if you care about product and like the people you work with. Most customers are friendly and enjoy chatting. Nice discount.

    Cons

Terrible pay. Since most of the product is an expensive luxury the store attracts occasional rich customers who treat employees terribly. Very small staff so it is uncomfortable if your coworker is not your friend and/or is having a bad day. If you have nothing in common with your coworkers the shifts will be very long. Unless you are a manager or have ambitions to run your own store you are expendable and will be treated as such.

    Advice to Management

Don't play mind games. Don't gossip.

I worked at Yankee Candle part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great working environment within the local mall. Clean, neat and well organized. The whole place smelled great. Got to wear nice, professional clothes to work.

    Cons

Lots of drama as the whole staff was female. Too much overwhelming pressure to sell, sell, sell, even though no one received a commission. Yuck! Even when you did sell and meet sales goals, it was never, ever enough!

    Advice to Management

Girls in their early twenties don't make good management material. Appreciate the difficulties of selling something unnecessary without even the incentive of a commission or bonus! Not many people are willing to do this.

I have been working at Yankee Candle part-time

    Pros

It is a fun store to work in for the most part. Love the product. The discount is great.

    Cons

The pay is absolutely horrible!!! Raises are practically nothing! You so get secret shopped every quarter and they expect a lot from you. I understand great customer service but I often felt we were to pushy with the customers. They felt uncomfortable and became rude when you had to say or ask certain questions.

    Advice to Management

Make the pay better or don't expect so much to be done in very little time. Listen to your employees more .. We work with the customers and hear what they want so take our advice.

I have been working at Yankee Candle full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I have worked my way up to assistant manager over the past 5 years. This job is way less stressful and slow paced when compared to other retail jobs. The product is amazing and the discount is really nice. I've met some nice people working at different stores throughout my district and really enjoy the customers as well. There are a lot of opportunities to move up because people are always leaving.

    Cons

They do not appreciate loyalty. The pay is horrible. The benefits have gotten better since the company was bought by Jarden Corporation. District and regional managers are poorly chosen. The Semi annual sale reset on Christmas Eve is horrible every year, they need to let their employees be with their families rather than have such a big project at work. They still do secret shops quarterly.

    Advice to Management

I would advise corporate to pay attention to how the district and regional managers are chosen because through my experience In my particular district I have witnessed a lot of corruption.
