I have been working at York Region full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company will offer training that you would use for your job, computer training is available for anyone who wants to learn the excel, word and outlook. Most managers are supportive to this.

    Cons

Over the last few years, it has become too many managers, not enough front line worker, it is all about the business, but the managers are at times forgetting why the business is there in the first place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to cut back on the management staff and get the front line staff more help to look after what really matters

    I worked at York Region

    Pros

If you worked there full-time it seemed really laid back, lots of time to chat with people, lots of time off. I know the pay for full-time people is very good (not so great through temp agency).

    Cons

As a temp, they only gave me a pass card to access the building a few weeks before my temp job ended, I had to wait outside in the cold for someone to let me in. They didn't seem very organized. Union seems to protect people even though they don't have much work to do or don't do it well. Not sure how some got their jobs although I was told it was more about likability and education than skills or experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people with good skills not just a certain education level or because you liked them in an interview - hire someone because they can do the job and do it well.

I worked at York Region full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pockets of enthusiastic improvement focused people. Pays well. Good benefits

    Cons

Overtime. No recognition of work. Unionized administration staff are not required to keep up with technology. Senior management are reluctant to do anything but tow the commissioner's line.
You need a Master's degree to get in the door for any non-union position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your staff. Recognize achievements. Promote from within.

I worked at York Region as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

York Region was a great place to work in. People there are all extremely friendly and there are various activities throughout the year. I worked as a GIS student for the Geographic Information Services branch. Although I was a student, they treated me like any other full time employees. I got to work in some interesting projects and I would go home feeling accomplished everyday.

    Cons

I really didn't experience anything negative when I worked there. The only thing I can think of is that when you arrive late to work, it's really hard to find parking space since everyone drives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just keep doing what you're doing!

I have been working at York Region full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Offers great pay, benefits, and a laid back work environment. Hires mostly on contract but it is a great way for you to get your foot through the door if this is soemthing you are interested in.

    Cons

Most positions are unionized. Some may prefer this while others would not. I personally do no think this is beneficial. It does not encourage creativity, productivity and succession based on effort.

I have been working at York Region

    Pros

Respect in the workplace. Management / staff in most departments have excellent communication. Many benefits, like tuition reimbursement, sabbaticals, flex time, compressed work week

    Cons

Not all departments are managed the same. Ie: some supervisor's aren't as flexible as others. Need more consistency within Departments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have supervisors across departments implement policies consistently
