Fantastic to work at the Call Centre as a student part time.

Caller/Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
North York, ON (Canada)

I worked at York University part-time for more than 3 years

ProsManagement were students who had previously worked on the floor, so they were very empathetic to current callers.
Their management (Floyd and Vanessa) were easy to approach, nice, friendly.
Calling alumni and hearing about their experiences really opened up my eyes to how big York really was.
Getting a large donation from an alum made my week - how great is is that Alumni are so dedicated to York!

ConsCalling alumni who didn't want to be called or who had a bad experience at York... Generally lots of yelling.

Advice to Senior ManagementLoved working at the call centre. Perfect as a part-time job for a student.

Great people in my department but too much red tape

Teaching Assistant (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at York University full-time for more than a year

ProsA lot of resources, most people are very friendly and helpful, funding can usually be found, great health benefits (dental, vision, chiropractic, etc)

ConsAs soon as you have to deal with management it's a battle, you will often be treated as a number by the administration, expect a lot of mistakes regarding contracts and pay and read everything over closely

Advice to Senior ManagementMore clear management needed. Interdepartmental communication would also help

Research Assistant (Current Employee)

I have been working at York University part-time for less than a year

ProsThe engineering dept. is expanding, due to additional funding. Small groups, more personal attention. A lot of smart and talented people around. Future is bright.

ConsFunding is limited compared to other larger universities. Everything moves really slowly. Beware of people trying to pounce and take credit for your work.

I have been working at York University full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe graduate faculty assistants are really helpful and also the faculty members from Department of Earth and Space sciences are really good and helpful.
Most of the research took place in ESS department is mostly cutting edge research; and funding to the students is satisfactory too.
Most of the funding to the students is from TA from Natural Sciences Division.

ConsThe number of courses available for undergrads and graduate levels are less.
