I have been working at Young's Market full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company is financially very stable and it's a friendly place to work. Offers wide variety of positions from Warehouse and logistics to Sales and of course the support departments like customer service, finance, IT etc.

    Cons

Doesn't offer perks and the benefits are below par. Not much room to grow unless you are in sales department. Yearly raises are below average as well. Rely to much on vendors to get anything done than building something in-house.

    Advice to Management

Below market salary and lack of ever changing priorities can cause a lot of discontent and stress and may be leading to high churn rate or feeling of disengagement.

I have been working at Young's Market full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The best spirits & wine distributor in the west coast from my experience. They give you every opportunity for advancement and they want you to advance. You just have to do your part, understand the industry and be ready to roll with the punches. You better love sales and booze. Remember it's a sales based industry and THAT is what is expected of you. Very basic starting salary around mid $30k, but vehicle expense, a little cell phone and auto insurance help brings you around $40k + incentives seem to be the best in the industry. Great suppliers. Lots of promises of support with resources and technology.

    Cons

Many positive changes and upgrades currently are causing lapses in communications and confusion. That being said, to get incentives you must know how to manage your bosses expectations as well as the relationship you build with buyers. At entry level if you're lucky to have an understanding DM...consider yourself lucky, otherwise they and upper management really don't care about your relationship with buyers. They set high expectations with suppliers and expect you to deliver & get your store buyers to bring in cases upon cases of product into the store every delivery. They would love 'bombs' (50+cases) every time & the focus changes towards the different, liquor, beer, wines suppliers all the time. It's just the nature of the business. Lots of competition for space with every product that sits in the floor or back stock from toilet paper/water to soda, chips, etc. Youngs has kept and built great products which makes it easier. Again it's a Sales focused job even though you're also expected to merchandise.

    Advice to Management

Ehh. Do your thing, just don't get too cocky. For some younger ones it's too late. Too many levels of reporting communication gets fuzzy. Better communication down to your workhorses so the relationships can be salvaged when the next wave of recruits cone in. Develop a program to fill the gaps in between hiring new reps.

    Pros

Good product line to sell. Always new things coming on line. A lot of support from management. Good perks and education given. Always get something from accounts because of exclusive product line.

    Cons

none that I can think of. There are the requisite quota's and pressure to make placements. Every month meetings can be a little long and used to have a fairly high turnover of reps that you are dealing with.

I have been working at Young's Market full-time

    Pros

Company is continually growing in the development of its internal processes and corporate strategy. Privately owned, very stable

    Cons

Unless working in the sales department there is little room for career advancement. Feagmented business units and lack of communication and collaboration between departments

    Advice to Management

Realize that you have been placed in management for the benefit, growth, and development of those whom you are managing

I worked at Young's Market full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Family owned and operated. The Underwood family is a great family that runs the company with integrity and ethics.

    Cons

It's difficult to cross into other departments. For example from Marketing to Sales.

I worked at Young's Market full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I found the company very rewarding and fun. Working around alcohol is serious business, but you get all sorts of fringe benefits. Good work hours, bosses micromanage minimally, and you get bonuses.

    Cons

OND (October, November, and December) are hellish months in this industry. Don't expect to take time off, since they are hardcore in sales mode. They do nearly 50% of their sales in just these few months, you do that math! The sales positions can be extremely stressful, especially if you have low-performing accounts (Rite-Aid, Walgreens, stores where the managers don't have the power to make sales decisions). They also have a penchant for hiring recent college grads and burning them out (or they are not meant for the industry).

    Advice to Management

Train your employees a bit more and coach them. The art of sales is quite complex and can be stressful for everyone at all levels, especially new hires.

    Pros

This company is fantastic! The management is honest and empathetic towards all of the hard work the sales team produces. The pay is great and there are several opportunities to make monthly bonuses on top of base pay. This is a family owned company with fantastic morals.

    Cons

The warehouse operations are terrible. Several delivery issues on a daily basis. This leaves the responsibility 9 out of 10 times to the account manager, which consumes a lot of time. Complete waste of the company's money.

    Advice to Management

Separate from Columbia Distributing. The money and time that could be saved on Account Manager's delivering the product would be well worth the extra expense to have your own warehouse and operations.

    Pros

Great pay, great job security, awesome people. Client relationships are very rewarding and you have tons of autonomy.

    Cons

If you are looking to add professional skills, sales trainings, management courses etc to your resume this is not the place to work. They are looking for soldiers, not to grow people. The training system is essentially trial by fire. Dozens of "weekly" initiatives take away from the core goal of building revenue and value with customers on a daily basis.

    Advice to Management

Make clear, long term goals for employees and do not constantly deviate. Clean up supplier funded management incentives so that sales personnel are not being repurposed every couple days.

    Pros

Friendly, upbeat place to work. Company perks include nice meals and product sampling. Great rapport from top down. Beautiful office and facilities. Quick to update equipment. Encourage company-assisted education. No weekend work.

    Cons

Not a lot of room for income increase for office staff - tight with wage funds. Overtime is discouraged which is nice but doesn't help when there is a lot of extra work to do.

    Advice to Management

Pay a living wage to your office employees. Keep the positive attitude flowing.
