I worked at Youngstown State University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Hard-working faculty and staff who care about students. Fairly high percentage of non-traditional students who, in my experience, are generally more serious about their studies than some right out of high school.

    Cons

Some buildings need renovation; frequent budget problems; labor-management climate is not the best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize and consult with the talent within your own university before spending money on outside consultants.

I worked at Youngstown State University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great work environment, laid back employees but still get alot of production. Majority of staff members are friendly and the University is working hard to obtain a more prestigious reputation. Jim Tressel is the current President!

    Cons

Top-heavy structure, there are way too many administrators in relation to the amount of employees. Witnessed violations regarding union contracts with no compensation. People can be fired without sufficient notice.

I worked at Youngstown State University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I was a student technician and I learned a lot from being on the job. As a student, there wasn't advancement opportunities, but it was still a good place to learn.

    Cons

Biggest downside was lack of communication between departments and how nothing seemed very cohesive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on communicating with all the other departments.

I have been working at Youngstown State University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The salary is great for the cost of living in Youngstown area

    Cons

Complete lack of reinforcement for a job well done or going above-and-beyond, culture of area and university encourages doing the bare minimum, as an open-access university many students GREATLY underprepared for college, disconnect between faculty/admin

I have been working at Youngstown State University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Love teaching-- kind people on staff, great students, safe and enthusiastic learning environment. Good pay for hours worked, and very manageable time wise to suit a hectic lifestyle.

    Cons

No health care for part time, no summer work for part time, no assistance or guarantee of hours from semester to semester. Although it has good pay, it is not a job that is stable nor reliable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let part-time faculty and staff work year round-- even if it is for camps and field trips, research, editing, i.e. I would appreciate working even if it was cleaning for the university in the summer...

I worked at Youngstown State University part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Was given the freedom to develop my own lesson plan. The department chair was easy to work with. All of the professors and instructors were helpful and friendly. Rewarding to teach undergraduates who were anxious to learn. Overall, it was a great university environment.

    Cons

Some of the technology (computers, classroom teaching aids) was outdated, pay was low for part-time instructors. No benefits for part-time instructors.
