I have been working at Youngstown State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everybody here is really nice; has a laid back atmosphere. As long as you do your job everybody is very friendly and fun to talk to. You don't have to keep yourself busy if there is nothing to do. The hours are very flexible around your class schedule.

    Cons

This particular job (student technician) just pays minimum wage and allows just 25 hours per week, so if you are living on your own, you may not be able to support yourself by working this student job. You must also be taking classes at YSU to be able to work here as a student.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Youngstown State University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students at YSU are excellent. They are fun, outgoing, curious, and hard working. There are students from all different background, making working at YSU always interesting. Good benefits.

    Cons

Upper management (Deans and above) don't seem to value their employees. Administrative staff get paid much more than professional staff due to years of union politics. Recent layoffs have made the work atmosphere very tense. There's no room to move up and so people stagnate in their positions. Management is resistant to change.

    Advice to Management

Get out of Todd Hall every once and a while and get an understanding of on-the-ground challenges. Re-evaluate pay structure. Pay for adjunct faculty hasn't been raised in decades (meaning with inflation the value has halved). Entry level professional positions (which require a master's degree) start at 32k/year. Ridiculous.

I worked at Youngstown State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The position of Design Editor is a great learning experience for a new designer. The Jambar is a real world environment with the security of a learning environment.

    Cons

The only con for this position is that there is not a set of guides for newly in charge editors. It is up to them to figure out things that should probably be written down for them.

    Advice to Management

The amount of freedom that the faculty advisors give to the student workers forces them to learn responsibility. However, stopping in on a production night every couple of weeks could give students a boost.

I worked at Youngstown State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There is a definite feeling of family and loyalty for some people. Most departments have one friendly face or friendly person who is willing to go above and beyond their job description.

    Cons

The administration is completely inept. A football coach acting as president who has no idea what he is doing. People being fired because they are doing their job, while others are being hired and promoted without proper qualifications, but b/c of their skin color. No one wants to do more than is required because they feel undervalued.

    Advice to Management

Remove the BoT, President, and try again this time with someone who has experience in higher education administration and not how to cheat on the football field.

    Pros

The amount of learning and talent is phenomenal, and the professors treat you like junior colleagues.

    Cons

The lack of communication between areas on campus.

    Advice to Management

    $7500 stipend is barely livable.

    Pros

Flexibility was a nice benefit as I was working on my degree. Also, all the people working were very nice to work with.

    Cons

I thought about working there after graduation, but things seemed to be shifting and I wasn't certain where things were going to go.
