I have been working at Younkers part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Employees are nice, management too, and they give prizes for meeting goals and such, you get a great employee discount, not bad like some other stores. Very clean and pretty store.

    Cons

Too much pressure to peddle the store credit card. The managers always harp on the employees about it, everything revolves around the store credit card and getting emails. Very few people want a store credit card these days, because they don't want a credit card period. In addition to being pressured to open credit, you have presales (for annual sales which seem like they run every six seconds), way too many promotions, pressured to sell community day books, and to boot, order something for a customer in the find it system(???-also, ordering an item now has a goal set of one order per day? really?) and on top of all that you have to get five emails from customers. Bit much. I might even go as far as to say that we're not getting paid enough to even do that much. There is a goal set of one store credit card per shift, but of course they always give special attention to the people that open two in a day, rather than those with "singles."

Coupons are kind of a mess. Most of them have a wall of fine print in the back listing exclusions. This causes conflict with the customers because of all the "bonus buys" and "yellow dot" and so on, and so on, so they often don't know that what they have is an exclusion until they get to the counter and ring it up. In short, one big head-ache. During the holidays they had to be open during Thanksgiving which is these days, a naturally occurring retail thing, but nevertheless, unnecessary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expectations are a bit too high, but other than that, they are nice and treat people I believe, fairly. I realize this may be subjective.

I worked at Younkers part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Interaction with customers, learning how business works, learning hard work, etc...would recommend to most people wanting a job that either haven't worked before or don't want something too difficult to pick up.

    Cons

Difficult to get around the pestering customers to sign up for company credit card, management bugs employees to do this very often, everything revolves around sales/no incentive for employees to get sales.

    Pros

If you are good then you are treated fairly well. Friendly staff. Management can be good if they like you.

    Cons

Poor pay, management is sometimes lacking, management handles situations incorrectly, sometimes no hours and sometimes long hours, management plays favorites.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat everyone equally.

I have been working at Younkers part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I needed a job. If you're desperate, you'll do anything. They always have openings because there is massive, constant turnover.

    Cons

They don't respect their employees and place unreasonable demands on them. They think nothing of having you close the store at midnight then schedule the next morning at 5:45 am. They blame the computer for the scheduling then do nothing to fix it.

Staffing issues are a problem. You will regularly work multiple departments at the same time and they tolerate endless attendance issues by people who should have been terminated long ago.

A very toxic atmosphere. Management is very loud and degrading when barking expectations on you without providing anything motivating or encouraging. They expect you to sell store credit cards, community day books and other stuff but they don't really train anyone HOW to do it.

Customers can be really difficult because off the confusing dishonest promotions and advertising.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get with the program. Company stock is lower than it's been in years and things are getting worse. They need to get rid of the old retail dinosaurs and put a new team in place with a brand new strategy for success.

I have been working at Younkers as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

The people you work with are interesting and mostly fun to be around, the discounts are wonderful (20% the first year, 25% after that, if you stay for 10 years, you get a lifetime discount), The managers are really approachable and understanding.

    Cons

Too few employees for what needs to be done, not enough hours available for the employees they have, everybody gets overworked especially around the holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go through the hours budgeted, and see if there's any way to give the people working the floor more time where cleaning and organizing is possible.
