Current Employee – been working at Younkers part-time for more than 3 years
Pros – I love Younkers! I have worked here for years. I started in management and ended as a sales manager but stayed on as a short hour associate while I pursued a career in financial services. I love this company. I have worked at both stores in my city and both of the HR managers and store managers are fantastic.
Cons – They are troubling through this economic time in terms of re-organization of their staff. So, basically, customers can't find anyone to help them sometimes. It's busy and overwhelming at times, but if you've got the right attitude the customer will oversee the wait!
Advice to Senior Management – Train train train. Please leave the project, you can do that later. Spend time with your new associates. Even if they have a "buddy"....check in!
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Current Employee – been working at Younkers full-time for less than a year
Pros – Generous employee discount; lots of good sales/coupons employees are actually allowed to take advantage of; starting pay higher than minimum wage
Cons – Horrible store management; part-time associates are capped at a maximum of 25 hours; always understaffed
Advice to Senior Management – Hire more people, treat them better, and make sure the rules are applying to EVERYONE

Current Employee – been working at Younkers full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – The benefits package once you qualify for them.Opportunity to work in a nice upscale environment. You do not get written up for leaving early. The company's way of thinking...they don't have to pay you as much.
Cons – Since we are now owned by Bon-Ton,it's been quite a few years, our store's look and quality of merchandise has dramatically changed for the worse.Corporate won't give the needed hours to staff the store. The biggest complaint I hear"Where can I check out?" Because the "At Your Service Center" located at the entrance to the mall is NEVER manned. They just have little signs posted"Sorry these wrap stands are closed" Also since our store is trying to be run on a shoe string,on the lower level where basically all the clothing for women are located, loss prevention will only let 5-7 dressing rooms to be open. All others are locked since we don't have the staff to watch them.
Advice to Senior Management – Learn how to keep your good workers. They need to hold mandatory communication classes for all management on how to communicate more effectively with the sales associates.Bring back a customer service dept.,that is not how a company should cut corners by eliminating the one service that shows our customers basically that we as a store, do not care about giving you good service.Eliminating our sales managers except for an HR manager and store manager had to be again one of the worst decisions possible. For a sales associate to try to page a supervisor, as they're now called,it's rather difficult to assist our customers when we at times are sent to an answering machine.

Former Employee – worked at Younkers full-time for less than a year
Pros – Good benefits, ok pay if you ask for it, and commission in some areas.
Cons – This company is downsizing and many areas are struggling because their employees are stretched too thin, inconsistent hours, retail has its own downsides.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop downsizing and stop putting tons of pressure on supervisors to get all of the work done alone.

Former Employee – worked at Younkers
Pros – Coworkers, fashion, discount, regular customers, always something to do, good retail experience
Cons – Can be stressful, busy days, short staffing, associates work hard while managers sit around, unclean work area, body strain from carrying loads of clothes and getting things down from up high
Advice to Senior Management – Get involved with customers and staff; you get paid enough that when your paperwork and phone calls are done, introduce yourself to customers and make sales and when its really busy, maybe help out your associates since they have several things to do and are taking care of the most important thing, the CUSTOMER! Give more incentives (corporate)
