I have been working at ZHAW part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Great research in engineering department: ICCLab is most rewarded cloud computing research facility in Switzerland due to its technology transfer to small and medium enterprises, high publication rate and
    - Good social security and job security: no hire & fire policy, thoughtful hiring processes
    - Diversity: absolutely no discrimination of old or handicapped people, university management is actively working towards proactive assistance for handicapped people
    - Personal, respectful relationships between professors and students (which is not usual in Swiss universities of similar size): possibility for students to work in research
    - Long tradition and good enterprise culture: traditional theme party ("Frackumzug": a large parade where graduates wear tailcoats to celebrate the diploma reception)

    Cons

    - Sometimes lack of interdisciplinary projects due to long communication paths
    - Top level management seeks the wrong examples for inspiration: they try to copy the "guideline culture" of typical anonymous mass universities - not noticing that rules and guidelines of mass universities are in fact not applicable to ZHAW's culture - which is about people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Focus on strengths of ZHAW: research projects that have an impact on society by teaching students and delivering technology to industry partners
    - Avoid the temptation to "guideline" everything: innovation needs a free market place and ideas of students and researcher are welcome

Good employer, as long as you do what you're told.

I have been working at ZHAW

    Pros

Salary is among the best in the world for this type of work.
All mod. cons. provided, all systems function well.
    Relationships generally supportive.

    Cons

ZHAW is very big and standardized: I often feel just like a cog in the machine.
There is a lot of bureaucracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on quality of learning rather than institutional growth or further accreditation. Decide whether you want ZHAW to be a teaching or a research centre - the two are not mutually supportive.
