    Pros

Most of the people are great to work with.

    Cons

Management is lacking in areas. Safety was lacking in many departments, especially the back stock rooms and basement stock room.

I worked at Zellers part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

best group of co-workers. all supervisors were very friendly, accommodating and always willing to help, very flexible with changing schedule and shifting shifts when needed. supervisors were friends with all employees but still set boundaries and rules. bought lunch for holidays and snacks at random times.

    Cons

customers were very difficult at times, HR had too few cashiers in peak hours, and too many during down times. the signs were not always changed with weekly sales which created confusion at check out. some of the floor staff were too lazy and were only there for the pay check.

    Pros

Great people; manager was wonderful; customers were terrific (although there is a rotton apple in every bunch)

    Cons

Lack of properly working equipment prevented us from doing our jobs quickly and accurately; upper echelon (read: head office) didn't care about us, all they cared about was the bottom line

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too bad you had to sell our souls to Target.

    I worked at Zellers full-time

    Pros

Co-workers were friendly, team environment was the only thing good about working for this company.

    Cons

Poor management on all levels lead to a demeaning work experience and caused extremely high turnover in the organization. Eventually Zellers went out of business.

    Pros

Compensation, autonomy on merchandising, great leadership from Mark Foote. Product selection. Could be such a fun environment

Buyers and home office group never listened to stores. Old timers who were just waiting around for packages. HR dept that had their favourites. HR not approachable about Admins with attitude

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Zellers full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The best part about working at Zellers was the customers and staff.

    Cons

Wage increases were minimal if any, they always seemed to find reasons not to give raises. Store managers treated staff very poorly.
They expected supervisors to put in long days since they were on salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice since they are now closed.
And we all wonder why the store closed.......

I have been working at Zellers as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

HBC is a great company to work for because there is a lot of room to grow, learn and move up, if you are serious about your career and show it through your work. The people are friendly and you get a lot of opportunities to get involved in a hands on way, rather then just sitting behind a computer all day. Flex hours are amazing!!

    Cons

No benefits if you are on contract, but this is the norm for most places.
