    Pros

You'll be working with some of the most talented designers in the world. You'll be at the forefront of design innovation.

    Cons

Schedules are rough and the pressure to be on the top of your game is high. Communication from Principals isn't as forth coming as one might expect it to be.

    Pros

Very collaborative atmosphere. The office attracts some of the best in the business, its really a wonderful place to work. The firm gets a good mix of projects from different client types, so tends to weather business cycles well. Very good at winning work. Many technically complex projects, which is fun if you are into that. Does not break down into studios like many other large firms, so people can move around and work on different building types.

    Cons

None that don't come with the general Architecture industry

The industry's impression of ZGF is based on the work from Portland (HQ), and is not reflective of the other offices.

I worked at Zimmer Gunsul Frasca full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

From an HR stand-point, ZGF takes good care of its people. If you are given the opportunity to work in the Portland office, the work is exciting and you may have a few good projects for your portfolio.

    Cons

The other offices are completely different from the Portland office. The Seattle office is doing some good work, but is definitely more conservative. The Los Angeles office, while being a top-producer ($) for the firm, is very conservative, and the projects are frankly just boring. The East coast offices are small and fairly insignificant at this time. Unless you are in Portland, ZGF is not a place for promising architects/designers to stay and grow long-term. But if you are a mediocre architect/designer, this is probably a great place for you to just park it for the next 20 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The office culture is so cliche it's embarrassing. Example, straight off the ZGF homepage: "WE WORK WITH CLIENTS TO DEVELOP WORKPLACE SOLUTIONS THAT RESPOND TO THEIR CULTURE AND BUSINESS OBJECTIVES." Yes, and so does everyone else in the industry - that's your job. If your intent is to be a middle-of-the-road firm, then keep it up with the wooden phrases.

Great Design work, but pay & culture need improvement.

    Pros

They do some really beautiful work. The Portland office is a little more cutting edge with design. Seattle office is more conservative. They allowed a lot of flexibility in schedule for working parents.

    Cons

The pay is under market rate. Many of the leaders in the Seattle office are challenging to work with (especially in interiors) and leadership ignores their inappropriate behavior. Quality female leadership is lacking. Very male dominated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a hard look at the culture and hierarchy. Empower younger staff and allow them new opportunities. Better train senior leadership to mentor. When choosing female leadership, carefully evaluate to ensure they are a positive example. Look at other companies salaries and be comparable.

    Pros

ZGF is a sustainability focused architecture firm with five offices. They have been fortunate to get some good clients and projects.

    Cons

Not everyone here is honest although they're cloaked in a shroud of pride about integrity. The openness they say they have is totally manufactured.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get honest.

I have been working at Zimmer Gunsul Frasca

    Pros

High design firm with an inherent focus towards sustainability built in. Firm has the feeling of family if you integrate yourself, take on responsibilities whether there's a need or you create them yourself.

    Cons

Can be long hours. Management, while very intelligent and talented, occassionaly neglects its ability to exercise it's strong arm on employees which allows some individuals to become unruly and disrespectful of their managers and their peers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the communication- between offices, employees and the general knowledge base. Avoid pigeon holing valuable employees who will leave if they feel their talents go unrecognized.
