I have been working at Zimmer

    Pros

I like the support I get from my staff team and functional support teams. My peers are knowledgeable and easy to work with. The operating teams are open and receptive to change. A tremendous amount of experience and skill makes the amount of technology we use appear simple to apply to our processes. The company is investing in technology everywhere.

    Cons

Some teams are ahead of others related to continuous improvement. The teams are all aligned to the same goals and metrics yet somewhat autonomous in the way they are managed to achieve goals.

I have been working at Zimmer full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good work/life balance with flexible management. Company turns a profit and offers decent pay. The work is not stressful or technically difficult. 401k contributions are above average - make sure to ask about the vesting schedule if considering a move.

    Cons

Prior to merger, turnover was high. The company is merging with a competitor (Biomet) and treatment of employees throughout the process has been poorly handled. Zimmer's distribution and ERP systems are antiquated and don't allow for operational executions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is important to retain people through the merger to ensure that there is an effective transition of the Zimmer product lines over to Biomet control. Employees need to be competitively compensated during the transition period. It is also important to consider and apply the quality system improvement initiatives to the Biomet organization to ensure that the lessons learned are not forgotten.

I have been working at Zimmer full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The products are some of the best on the market. The sales people are unique in the industry, it takes a certain person to work at Zimmer.

    Cons

A lot of turn over in upper management. Too much government oversight. Hospitals blaming the manufactures for pricing when there is much more waste within the system.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the inventory issues under control, compensate your employees, solidify leadership.

I worked at Zimmer as a contractor (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Zimmer is a good company to begin a career with in medical device sales. It's relatively well respected in the orthopedic surgeon community.

    Cons

The role of the orthopedic device salesperson is not what it used to be. Hospitals have more sophisticated purchasing processes and surgeons have less control over which implant they choose.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

High turnover in corporate marketing creates a challenge for sales reps in the field.

    I worked at Zimmer full-time

    Pros

Creating products that are helping people living more fulfilling lives
Low cost of living and short commute
Many good people with strong values

    Cons

    Non-visible, non-engaging senior leadership.
Little accountability and follow through by leadership
Poorly designed processes, leading to redundancy, back-door politics and loopholes
Little perception of authenticity or commitment to the employee
Lots of turf-wars and in-fighting between senior leaders

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be transparent. Listen to your people and follow up in a timely manner on their suggestions. You claim that they are the most valuable resource but treat them like "they're lucky to have a job." (Something I actually heard leaders say many times.) Treat them like the adults they are, who can hear tough messages and react with maturity.

I have been working at Zimmer full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    Huge company environment
Treat the full time employees very well
    Lots of younger engineers
Lots of group activities and celebrations for meeting deadlines

    Cons

    Long work hours
    very deadline based work
Assignments often change or just removed

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some of the remediation engineers are barely paid better then CO-OPs. Balancing that and offering some sort of benefits/workout center for the contracted employees would really boost morale.

I worked at Zimmer as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

People are very friendly and open to questions.

    Cons

Sometimes your manager may be too busy to provide you work.

Regarding the city: one should know driving to live at Warsaw or else weekends can become very boring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A more structured and pre- planned intern schedule can be very helpful.
