    Pros

    They really value everyone's opinion and care about all employees happiness. It is truly a joy to come in to work.

    Pros

    Free meals, paid for meal time

    Cons

    Poor management, contempt for temp employees, self-congratulatory, smug culture. They treat temps as though they're of subnormal intelligence and semi-criminal. The management's like that at Target, only more pretentious. I don't care if Mario Batali loves your bacon--there's no prestige attached to be working for a buck or so above minimum wage for a bunch of hipsters, and no one's particularly lucky to be working there for a few weeks. Warehouse supervisors and management screw up minor things constantly, which results in not getting paid for inefficiencies in punch-in, last-minute shift cancellations due to poor planning. Not surprising for s a crappy, poorly paid temp job, but they're so proud of themselves and continue to reinforce how lucky you are to be working there. If you need the hours, don't volunteer for the night crew--that's where they cut back on hours or cancel shifts at the last minute if they've overestimated need for workers.

    Advice to Management

    Be satisfied with workers who are polite and reasonably efficient, and stop with the team spirit stuff. It's insulting.

    Pros

    customers are loyal, most people are friendly (but gossipy), pay is OK not terrible, some good managers

    Cons

    some are way uptight and take themselves too seriously. some managers are jerks. from time to time, you get the occasional chill dude. don't be fooled by the hippie dippie suff, people's true colors eventually shine. no matter how much you hear that youre changing the world, please dont be fooled, you're still a dishwasher or a server. Your opinion does not matter, dont even bother "giving feedback". no room for "reality" checks, viewed as cynicism, be ready to get shut down like the Eagles. Don't believe the lies about everyone being a family unless your family gossips then sure this is just like a big family. work is so repetitive promotions take years of brown nosing

    Advice to Management

    not a thing. you've somehow convinced employees that they're more than their repetitive jobs. line cooks think they're gordan ramsey and servers think they're ghandi changing the world. you're doing a great job!

    Pros

    Free snacks, Training provided, hourly pay is descent. (comparable to competitors but customers tip more- because it's Zingermans)

    Cons

    Catty culture. Worse than high school (people are older so you'd expect better). Management constantly talks about staff behind their backs. If you're saying XXX about my co-worker, I wonder what you say about me?! Really unprofessional. Terrible work life balance. They will work you to the bone here. And show no respect or gratitude if you work hard work. They harass you & guilt you, if you have other commitments like work or school. Thinking for yourself or having ideas is strongly discouraged. They pretend to want ideas and feedback but they dismiss original thoughts and ideas. If you're hard working, you need not apply. Only bros and hoes. If you're a bubbly airhead, you will do awesome here. They only need people to smile and do what they're told. I agree with other reviewers, management have their "favorites" so if you're ON the list.. these people are allowed to make mistakes and do whatever they want. If you're a long time favorite, partners and senior management will put blinders on when they do your performance reviews. If you're NOT a favorite, god help you.. they will try to pin and blame all mistakes on you. Very dysfunctional, hypocritical and hostile work environment. Bad temper everywhere, a lot of cursing, yelling and screaming. They expect you to take abuse. If you don't take the abuse, they'll say you're insubordinate. What's worse is that San Street acts like it's above it's competitors. "we're Zingermans, so we're better than any other restaurant". Lies! The kitchen culture is just like any other restaurant in town. Don't let them guilt you or fool you. They spout corporate values of respect and positivity--- literally right after tearing you a new one. I've worked at several retail establishments for a long time now (some local, some national) waitressing bussing and hosting and Zingermans has been the worst. All retail jobs have the same issues but I have never experienced the arrogance of the Zingermans culture. The biggest offense is that supervisors ask you to do things that they do NOT do themselves. Hypocrites!! Supervisors show up late all the time and then yell at you if you are even a minute late. Managers are exhausted and irritable all the time but they'll yell at you if you don't smile even for a second.

    Pros

    Coworkers/management at every level are like family. Great training, opportunity, ethics, healthy business with the right priorities while giving back to the community. Bosses have genuine generosity and concern about employees' well being and development. Great benefits- health care, 401k, paid time off, medical leave, etc

    Cons

    Although way ahead of the food industry in terms of pay, benefits, etc, wish they paid more- but unfair to compare the salary to the salary in a different industry requiring a bachelors degree- which is the only reason why I left, and I miss working there everyday. Unfortunately, $ speaks louder right now as a personal priority.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing, they're all great. Keep doing what you're doing. Appreciate that they're leading the current "thrive-able wage" campaign to raise the base pay.

    Pros

    -They are committed to paying their employees well. - Almost everyone who works for the company is extremely nice and competent. - Great job training and great benefits.

    Cons

    - The "nice" factor prevents them from effectively dealing with problem employees. There are employees who've had countless meetings with managers and HR about their behavior (like bullying) and nothing changes. At some point you have to let them go. - There's a lot of talk about listening to input from all employees, but very little action. - It's a retail job. More often than not, you'll be working every Saturday and Sunday.

    Advice to Management

    -Focus on dealing with problem employees more effectively. A thousand "let's sit down and talk about our feelings" meetings don't change bullies. -Provide training to managers and supervisors about being more approachable, and then make sure they do it. Perhaps managers should receive anonymous feedback from their employees as part of their yearly review.

    Pros

    Amazing benefits, lots of room to move up in the company, very nice company culture, great mobility from business to business.

    Cons

    They will make it seem like if you work for Zingermans, you are a Artisan, you are an artist, you are a specialized professional. but your not, your just an low trained employee like people that work at Panera.

    Advice to Management

    No advice necessary, management is doing great, it works well for them: they get people to settle for kitchen staff jobs thinking they are pastry chefs.

    Pros

    The founders of the company are amazing individuals who are still driving forces that always have time to talk. Everyone who works there is extremely helpful and incredibly sweet. And even the customers are fun, as long as it's not a football Saturday!

    Cons

    I did experience some favoritism from the front of house managers in scheduling, treatment and in dealing with conflict. I don't see this as a major reflection of the company as a whole, I just think there are a handful of people who use their position and power inappropriately.

    Advice to Management

    Test the feelings of ground floor workers often and when they give you feedback, actually listen to them.
