Great company overall; could use some internal management cleanup

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Zions Bancorporation full-time for more than 3 years

ProsBig company, more than 11,000 employees in 10 states (mostly in Utah, but a fairly big presence in California, Nevada, and Texas). Numerous opportunities to move around and gain new skills. A college degree is helpful in getting into higher paying positions, but I also know many managers who do not have degrees.

ConsAs with any large company, politics and protection of territory sometimes gets in the way of getting things done.

Advice to Senior ManagementRefocus on what matters most. Make it OK to discuss issues openly, rather than being concerned about the team getting a black eye if someone knows that something went wrong. Stop hiring managers who have no experience in the type of work they will be managing, particularly in back-office operations and IT. Where necessary, even in high-level upper management, make tough changes.

I have been working at Zions Bancorporation

ProsKnowledge sharing, challenging faced paced, great people. Overall Zions is a great place to work and they care about their people. There are a lot of areas to learn and many opportunities to grow. I would recommend Zions to any motivated individual.

ConsRegulations, regulations, regulations, goverment oversite can be a pain. Being in the banking industry there are continous audits and oversite that has to be followed.

A very good place to build a career in Banking if you have the education as it offers a wide variety of paths.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Zions Bancorporation

ProsZions is a "collection" of regional banks, affiliate banks, and offers a wide variety of locations geographically to work at, with each bank being unique and each maintaining separate charters and corporate offices. Vectra Bank in Colorado, Nevada State Bank in Nevada, Amegy Bank in Texas, and Zions in Utah to name just a few locations. Retail & commercial banking, retail & commercial lending, treasury opperations, trust, insurance, investment banking and a strong presence in foreign exchange. At Amegy for instance has won recognition for being "a great place to work" and has positive corporate culture, mentoring and officer development. Its a very open and diverse work place and very positive. If you are young and get recruited out of college then you are in a good position for growth.

ConsAs with most financial institutions a four year degree is a must if you are looking for career advancement. They do offer a tuition reimbursement plan it you want to finish college or obtain an advanced degree, however if you are an older employee when you obtain that degree it may not make a difference in obtaining career advancement. Their benefit plan is the bear minimum in the industry however this can vary depending on the affiliate bank you work for.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you tap into some of your older employees and offer them career growth and not just the young recruits out of college then you are in a good position to maximize your human capital.
