I worked at Zurich North America full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Very comfortable place to work with great people. Amazing global opportunities - spent several years abroad in addition to US opportunities. Decent benefits, fair pay.

    Cons

Very large, decision making can be a very bureaucratic process. Culture is relatively risk averse, making it hard to outperform peers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find opportunities to increase the speed of decision making. Middle management needs to become leaner.

    Pros

Very insular company, massive empahasis on extra curricular work and charity as part of your individual performance rating, use of bell curves in performance ratings.

    Cons

Excellent opportunities within the company and for progression, excellent paid time off and benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow us more to time to actually focus on our jobs! Less emphasis on exta projects and charity...

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time

    Pros

Benefits are ok slightly less pto than prior carrier that I worked for. 401k match is 6% summertime hours which allow employees to leave 2 hours early every friday equating out to a 38 hour work week however this has only been during the summer.

    Cons

Systems are antiquated and sluggish which add to a lot of frustration and technical errors. Office morale is generally low/ medium as many of the current employees are on the verge of retirement.

    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Zurich has excellent people. Everyone works together to overcome the troublesome IT infrastructure.
Benefits are amazing. 19 days paid time off to start plus holidays.
Schaumburg location is in a nice building and they are building a new headquarters

    Cons

    IT is quite weak
HR can be quite constricting. I had to submit a cover letter when I was up for a promotion

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Benefits and Work/Life very good. Salary is slightly below market.

    Cons

Management from top to bottom must go. Complete disorganization. Management only knows how to manage up and has absolutely no mind of their own. They say whatever the top brass wants them to say. No mind and no courage to stand on their own too feet and say whats on their mind. McKinsey and company is running the show, too dependent on quantitative analysis and not enough on business relationships. Company is hot and cold on insurance appetite and class of business. One day they are writing in a certain segment then the next day they get scared off and run for the hills. No consistency. Then they want to know why brokers don't want to do business with them. Way to many people who just babble all day long, accomplish nothing but just try and justify having a jobe.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fired them all. Top to bottom and lets get some real insurance people in.

Zurich is a heavily customer-focused organization.

I worked at Zurich North America full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Because Zurich is very customer-focused, the best career path would be in the insurance business side of the organization rather than a back-office or administrative role.

    Cons

The Zurich work environment is heavily driven by internal politics in many parts of the organization. While this may not be unique to Zurich, the non-market-facing functions in particular seem to be more susceptible to decisions based on connections and perceptions rather than objective merits and more tangible drivers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is probably a lot of unmonitored and unmeasured 'leakage' in some of the larger back-office functions like IT and Group Sourcing. Some of these functions have been outsourced and may not be working as well or as cost-effectively as believed within the organization so an outside perspective might help provide a clearer picture for senior management.
