    Pros

Zurich has excellent people. Everyone works together to overcome the troublesome IT infrastructure.
Benefits are amazing. 19 days paid time off to start plus holidays.
Schaumburg location is in a nice building and they are building a new headquarters

    Cons

    IT is quite weak
HR can be quite constricting. I had to submit a cover letter when I was up for a promotion

Zurich is a heavily customer-focused organization.

    Pros

Because Zurich is very customer-focused, the best career path would be in the insurance business side of the organization rather than a back-office or administrative role.

    Cons

The Zurich work environment is heavily driven by internal politics in many parts of the organization. While this may not be unique to Zurich, the non-market-facing functions in particular seem to be more susceptible to decisions based on connections and perceptions rather than objective merits and more tangible drivers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is probably a lot of unmonitored and unmeasured 'leakage' in some of the larger back-office functions like IT and Group Sourcing. Some of these functions have been outsourced and may not be working as well or as cost-effectively as believed within the organization so an outside perspective might help provide a clearer picture for senior management.

Current Employee - Workers Compensation Claims Adjuster  in  Los Angeles, CA
Current Employee - Workers Compensation Claims Adjuster in Los Angeles, CA

    Pros

There are many opportunities for growth and projects in the company if you are in the right division and location. They had excellent benefits, including a year end bonus depending on the company's results. If you push for opportunities, you will find something.

    Cons

Like many claims jobs, you are often tied to your desk. There are too many claims and not enough adjusters. It makes it hard to branch out on other projects when you don't have time to finish your daily job. It is a high stress job as well. There is a lack of teamwork and professional growth opportunities due to the claim volume. I don't think that it is just this company, it seems like that is the nature of the claims world. You have to really love claims to stick with it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retaining adjusters is very hard to do, but it is better to help your employees grow within the company than to see people leave due to high volumes and stress of the job.

    Pros

Awesome place to work! Good pay, benefits, and PTO. Managers truly care about our work-life balance. Zurich offers a variety of opportunities to advance your career through rotations, international assignments, and promotions.

    Cons

Cubicles tend to isolate teammates, which leads to a rather dull work environment. Decisions are slow and resistant to change, but that comes with any large bureaucracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Redesign workspaces to facilitate team-based collaboration.

Former Employee - Senior Trial Attorney  in  New York, NY
Former Employee - Senior Trial Attorney in New York, NY

    Pros

    Excellent salary and benefits.

    Cons

Laid off in last hired first fired situation with no consideration as to experience, proven track record, talent or contribution to the office,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make lay off decisions based upon merit and not longevity. If a so called trial attorney hasn't taken a verdict in 20 years he is incompetent and afraid to try cases despite the glowing evaluation his supervisor gives him. He is deadwood and contributes nothing except bring the brunt of a good joke.

    Pros

    Financial stability of company
    Good people in the ranks
I do not have 20 words worth of pros.

    Cons

    Culture
    Management
    Process overkill
    Metrics mania
Every year the employees are force ranked which creates a competitive and dysfunctional culture, this practice does not work well for this kind of organization. The best people are driven out because those that rise to the top are not necessarily the most effective at their job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I was in management. No one knows what is really going on. Talk to people instead of looking at the employee surveys.

Current Employee - Market Facing Underwriter
Current Employee - Market Facing Underwriter

    Pros

Good pay/benefits, friendly coworkers, Jeans Friday

    Cons

Extreme work overload, understaffed, cutthroat management style, no recognition for a job well done, VERY MICROMANAGED. Met the Global CEO in Schaumburg, IL Headquarters and he gave me a limp handshake and failed to look me in the eye which is basically a testament to how Zurich treats its employees. WAY TOO MANY trivial metrics (ie: extensive documentation for every move you make which can be extremely time consuming.) Senior level management doesn't care about what makes the most sense, only about business decisions that will result in better metrics! Mid-level management sucks up to senior counterparts to cover themselves at the expense of their employees, and are clueless when it comes to how the automated underwriting systems actually work. BUT they are quick to throw you under the bus should an error arise (often due to delay in processing time regarding proprietary rating tools which is out of the employee's control.) Software is extremely slow and will cost you business due to insanely high pricing compared to industry average - Zurich needs to realize the coverage it's offering isn't any better than it's competitors, 9 times out of 10 - so why charge double the premium? IT department is an absolute joke.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Quit.

Current Employee - Underwriter Assistant  in  Chicago, IL
Current Employee - Underwriter Assistant in Chicago, IL

    Pros

Managers are flexible, people are friendly, work environment is not overly stressful. It's sorta a great stable place where you won't be too challenged or stressed. Perfect for people looking to get their feet with, or to get a steady job with good benefits.

    Cons

Advancement is slow going and sort of 'pre-planned', you have to put in your time, the work is monotonous, too much time spent adhering to compliance and reporting rather than delivering to the customer. Some meetings are unnecessary, and mid managers need to work on their communication skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on employee productivity and efficiency rather than compliance and regulation
