I worked at Zurich North America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good Salary and benefits to employees with seniority

    Cons

Everything has to by "best practices" even though some of them really don't help you improve your work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Believe in your people, instead of those best practices

I worked at Zurich North America part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good compensation, friendly co-workers, business casual office culture. Good benefits, great trainers, HQ in Schaumburg is strong and progressive. Highly recommend working at HQ to start, if possible-may have better opportunities than I did. Executives are down-to-earth, and approachable. With a mentor, it's possible to be successful here.

    Cons

Slave-driving mentality. Sometimes, I felt that I was working for an outsourced call center. Lots of fraternization, can only move up in the ranks in a decent amount of time if you know someone in Senior Management, or have family who work for Zurich or Farmers. Not a lot of opportunities for people of color who start in lower end positions. HR needs sensitivity training, management is disorganized and overloaded, and too many politics for such an insignificant position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should be more cohesive, and have the backs of their employees. Too much gossip and finger pointing, not enough team spirit and mentoring. No upward mobility-talent acquisition&management can be misguided-do not know how to place employees in positions that will best serve the company, based on skill sets.

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Fair hours, pretty laid back, awesome benefits

    Cons

May be a little too laid back at times. Management is super rigid, doesn't really listen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Long hours and still can't keep up
    Do more with less culture

I worked at Zurich North America full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good people. Pays very good. It is a large, stable company that offers opportunity for advancement. The annual bonus opportunity is better than most.

    Cons

Very complex organization that is based in Switzerland. Human resources units in North America are not under one head. They each operate in their own silo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management in North America is very strong. Management from parent company not so good.

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Get left alone with your work, most managers do NOT micromanage, good PTO, after 90 days can get bonus, which is 10% of salary.

    Cons

terrible starting pay, lack of vertical movement, bad staffing models, and heavy work load.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're best friend cannot be someone who works directly under you.
This is an office, not an episode of mean girls. Not all suggestions for improvment are personal attacts at you or the company.

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I get to work with great people.

I have had many opportunities to learn.

    Great bonus and retirement benefits.

    Strong core values statement.

    Cons

Artificial constraints prevent us from reaching full potential.

Annual pay increases do not keep up with inflation, regardless of performance review.

The core values statement does not permeate everywhere that it should.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Remove the artificial constraints.

Rethink compensation so that employees can keep up with inflation.

I worked at Zurich North America full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The commercial market insurer has great products, exciting customers and interesting claims adjustment scenarios. Highly collaborative teams of underwriting and claim professionals are continuously involved in improvement activities.

    Cons

Career advancement can be sluggish at times depending on the function. Yet there is a strong focus on internal promotions that may solve this problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Needs to achieve the right work balance between HR and governance initiatives and strategic decision making to get the functional job done.
