    Pros

It really is a "people company". The kind of place where everybody is important and treated like the best thing since sliced bread. Satisfaction and exit surveys are actually acted on, processes are transparent, you can easily speak with everyone from CEO to interns and the parties/ events are pretty epic. Probably the best company I've worked in.

    Cons

Some processes are still unstructured which works on some level but not on others. A lot of growing pains visible as indicative of a growing company.

    Cons

Company does not manage large projects well, and has lost business and seen its reputation tarnished as a result. Arvato NA specializes in Hybris consulting, and has benefited from the buoyant Hybris market. But it now faces competition from leaner agencies. Prospects are murky at best.

Hiring and promotions seem based on interpersonal factors and ties to the management, rather than technical depth. Technical leads are often inexperienced and prone to mistakes. At least one "Hybris architect" at the company is unfamiliar with Hybris.

Little analysis is done prior to writing code ... the "ready, fire, aim" design method seems to predominate. Since analysis is superficial, software frequently needs to be reworked.. Critically, accurate estimates of times required for deliverables cannot be made. Final outcome : missed deadlines and unhappy clients.

Management style within software development teams tends to be autocratic, with little appreciation for the value of building consensus.

Technical work can be routine and boring at times, especially on larger projects

    Pros

Friendly and relaxed work environment. Management really wants to ensure employees have a pleasant work space and fun social events.
Attempted to bring salaries up to market value.

    Cons

Need to have more than one large account
Listen to your employees and engage them in what is happening with the company
    Actually hire a sales team.
Need to think big picture, rather than get scared by short term bumps in the road

    Advice to Management

Diversify your portfolio of project work.
    Provide more career development

    Pros

One of the very few things I enjoyed working here was the work life balance.
    Spacious office space.
    Flexible time.

    Cons

    1. Compensation much below industry average. This wide gap has lead to a massive exodus.
    2. No room for change. You're either a hybris developer or manager. I can't speak for the non-technology departments.
    3. Forced boss-employee relationship. Once you have a supervisor, be prepared to be treated on a lower level.
    4. Subtle favoritism. Unless you speak German or are in the "elite" circle, do not expect your voice to be heard.
    5. No challenging work.
    6. Inefficient processes. Unnecessary, overly complicated and slow way of doing things.
    7. Works as a department of a company, rather than an independent organization.

    Advice to Management

    1. Be more transparent. Get more people involved in decision making process.
    2. Consider the feedback from employees. Nothing was ever done with the feedback. Also, "employees around Bertelsmann are not satisfied with compensation, so we're not far behind", is no excuse for not making a change.
    3. Restructure the sales department. Everyone in the company knows this is the elephant in the room.
    4. Don't rely only on hybris.
    5. When hiring someone, see if they fit into the company culture.

    Pros

    1. Smart fun people
    2. Work with fabulous enterprise eCommerce platform in Hybris
    3. Work with fabulous brands such as Nikon, Levi's, Adidas/Reebok, Taylor Made, P&G, Puma, Benefit Cosmetics, Novation, etc.
    3. Rare combination of a startup atmosphere with the backing of a large multi-national corporation.
    4. Flexible hours for technical people so good work-life balance.
    5. Great benefits

    Cons

    1. Has experienced growing pains from rapid growth over the last few years.
    2. Must develop better project management structure and career development.
    3. As services company, projects (and employee performance) are affected by clients. If you’re assigned to a project with a client that has unrealistic expectations or is unwilling to do what they need to help themselves, your performance will suffer.

    Advice to Management

Project manager types naturally will have power in the company, so they make decisions evaluating technical people, but will often lack the knowledge to properly evaluate them (and their potential). The current job market means experienced technical people are in high demand. There is a huge risk of continuing to lose your best technical leaders if this doesn't change.

    Pros

Fantastic developers and architects. Great knowledge pool. It's a very stable company and all the projects are success. Great work culture and casual work environment. If you are a hybris developer then this is the company for you to learn.

    Cons

Should give equal opportunities to everyone
    Pay well

    Advice to Management

Marketing team is a concern. They aren't able to increase brand value of the company even though developers do a great job.

    Pros

There are some really smart people there. They end up leaving, but they're smart nonetheless.

    Cons

Compensation is significantly below market. The suspicion is that because they have so many employees who are on a visa, there is little incentive to provide competitive compensation since the difficulty of transferring a visa provides a significant barrier to exit.

    Advice to Management

    In no particular order:

    1. Get a new office. There is nothing worse than working with 75 people in an office designed to hold 50. I'm pretty sure the fire department has regulations against that kind of thing.

    2. Do something else in addition to hybris implementations. It should be fairly obvious that if hybris tanks, so does arvato. I can't imagine that is a particularly sound business strategy.

    3. Arvato looses a lot of employees due to the fact that their pay is terrible and there are few opportunities to move up. Unless arvato wants to continue to train its competitor's future employees, I would suggest it looks at ways to improve employee satisfaction. I would start with compensation.

    4. Capitalize the name of the company. 'arvato' is a proper noun, not a typo-turned-marketing trick.
