    Pros

Very mission driven and employee centric. They create a fun work environment. They hire the person not the job which allows for a great cultural fit. Lots of room for movement in most places.

    Cons

Watertown can be a pain to get to. Parking is an issue. Constant change can be fun, but sometimes frustrating

I worked at athenahealth full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A young workforce and startup-like atmosphere, friendly and casual environment.

    Cons

The dev team hires a lot of fresh grads from the local Ivies and tends to have a dim view of anyone without a degree, regardless of their skills. Also, the company is growing so fast that some of the infrastructure in place is no longer appropriate for the size of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees need more guidance and a clear path on how to develop in their career so they can be promoted.

I have been working at athenahealth

    Pros

It is a very fun and casual place with great work-life balance and a good culture. The work is also fun, but the benefits are the best.

    Cons

Sometimes it feels like there can be too many meetings for a tech job. Also the Perl language is annoying and outdated

I have been working at athenahealth full-time

    Pros

If you're in the right department, working at Athena can be a walk in the park. Decent benefits, a chance at a hefty bonus after year end, great opportunities for growth, and a "fun" atmosphere with ping pong tables, casual dress code, and the ability to bring your dog to work.

    Cons

The turnover rate within my department is insane. Several people have left within the past few months, so we are constantly having to train new people. The team is overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated. Several team members have been targeted by management and HR for truly insignificant "indiscretions", while accurate and diligent work is overlooked. It is frustrating to watch other employees in other departments who have a fantastic work-life balance and love coming to the office, while we feel like the black sheep of the Athena family. Hints of sexism and even racism. Very few people are actually able to move out of the department, and most team members ultimately end up leaving the company. Athena is losing really fantastic employees because of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your employees' hard work and great achievement at all levels. Compensate accordingly. When managers and their employees are at odds, consider both points of view as opposed to blindly taking the managers' side when they might just be trying to protect their own job and hide their mistakes.

Big company trying to feel little- doesn't work anymore

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very fast pace company, and lots of opportunity to learn. Collegiate atmosphere in Watertown. Beer fridge! Generous PTO schedule.

    Cons

Rapid growth takes a toll on current employees workload. Divisions goals seem to change all the time and we are shifting gears. If you don't like consistent change, you will not be happy here. A typical work week on average is 60 hours a week. If you would like to work closer to the 40 of a normal working week... this is not the place for you. You must work 60 in order to keep up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We say that we are flexible with work hours but flexibility means you can work the last 4 hours (after you work 8 at your desk) at home that night... and over the weekends.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great company! Had a great atmosphere and people loved helping each other. Benefits and perks were awesome and the culture was incredible. People had fun working and work/life balance used to be difficult but fun. Has a great sabbatical program to those who are lucky to have the ability to use it.

    Cons

Work/life balance is basically none. Enforcement of policies is very inconsistent and the stress level on management is huge the expectation is that nothing can ever fail.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more effective and noticeable work/life for employees, allow the sabbatical to be used not just as an option to employees who are high performers and can't use it because of their workloads.
